In 1917, French intelligence arrested exotic dancer Mata Hari and accused her of spying for Germany. They blamed her, without evidence, for the deaths of thousands of French soldiers. Her trial lasted two days. Her lawyer wasn't allowed to cross-examine witnesses. The tribunal took less than an hour to convict her. She was executed by firing squad that October, refusing a blindfold to the end. Decades later, sealed British and French files were opened. Neither contained solid proof of her guilt.
In 1930, Germany itself publicly cleared her name.She wasn't executed because she was a dangerous spy.She was executed because a nation needed a scapegoat to cover up its own failures.

This is a facial reconstruction of Turkana Boy, a 9-year-old child who lived in Kenya 1.5 million years ago, whose skeleton is the most complete Homo erectus fossil ever found.

In 1984, Kenyan fossil hunter Kamoya Kimeu discovered the remarkably complete skeleton of a young Homo erectus on the western shore of Lake Turkana in Kenya. Officially known as KNM-WT 15000, "Turkana Boy" lived about 1.5 million years ago and is one of the most important human fossils ever found. His skeleton is approximately 90% complete, giving scientists an unprecedented look at the anatomy, growth, and lifestyle of one of our early human ancestors.

Researchers estimate Turkana Boy was between 8 and 11 years old when he died, though his species matured more rapidly than modern humans. He already stood about 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters) tall and, if he had reached adulthood, may have exceeded 6 feet in height. Homo erectus possessed longer legs, shorter arms, and body proportions similar to modern humans, making it exceptionally well adapted for walking and running long distances across open landscapes.

Homo erectus was the first known human ancestor to spread beyond Africa. Beginning nearly 2 million years ago, the species migrated into parts of Asia and Europe, becoming the longest-lived human species known, surviving for well over 1.5 million years before eventually disappearing.

1 August 1943. Operation Tidal Wave. USAAF B-24D Liberators from Libya attacked 9 oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. Flying low to avoid radar detection they dropped time delayed bombs. Of 177 B-24s taking part in the raid 167 managed to attack their targets. 57 B-24s were lost.
