@DannoVallins That’s true but the same could be said for the other clubs who have had compensation. I’ve got my AFL hat on in this hypothetical and knowing how they do things I think some sort of compensation is likely.
Odds on Essendon winning the spoon again next year if Merrett and Ridley leave? The AFL potentially have a big issue on their hand at the end of next year with Tasmania coming in and potentially needing to compensate Essendon at the same time. 1/3
@ElliotSinJin It’s not what I want just a hypothetical of what the AFL could do, personally I don’t think any compensation pick should be in a top 10 of a draft.
@Zac939986539921 Personally I don’t think Essendon should get pick 2 it’s only a hypothetical if the AFL don’t want to hand out compensation in the Tassie draft.
I would be annoyed if I’m another club when any club gets a compensation pick let alone a high one.
@Carteagle A lot of compensation picks have come from clubs stuffing up their own club in some way, the AFL can’t really put the genie back in the bottle in this case.
@PletsasHellas I put it down to bad timing for both clubs to be poor, Port and Brisbane got hit hard in the 2011 draft and funny enough Eagles/Bombers/Richmond all kicked out of top 3 picks in 2010. Only two clubs of that lot haven’t won a GF since those drafts so you can recover from it
@Jack1183909 Even if he isn’t in the side his leadership around the club would still be a loss, Essendon should be going hard for some mature players but attracting to the club is an even bigger task. I can see a player like Setterfield surviving end of year cuts for this reason.
@mjonc43 They don’t need too obviously but some sort of compensation is likely, if they win only 1 game again next year they will no doubt get some sort of compensation but Tasmania complicates things.
@adamnicotera I can’t see any other opposition supporter being happy about it and for good reason, I would be annoyed if the show was on the other foot. The AFL might have backed themselves into a corner with the compensation packages they have given in recent years.
@mjkrawz Yeah as I said it’s the very likely outcome but do the AFL really want to revisit this two years in a row with Tasmania coming in? It’s just food for thought.
Essendon is more likely to get an end of first round pick if anything this year but do the AFL want to revisit this next year with Tasmania in their sights because they no doubt will if Ridley and Merrett leave, that will be the real conundrum for the AFL to consider.
Do the AFL try and get ahead of the issue and give Essendon Pick 2 this year with the proviso that they don’t get any compensation next year with an already compromised draft with Tasmania and at the same time wanting Tasmania to bring in as much elite talent as possible 2/3
Hi All, I've created a Patreon which I hope will get me closer to my dream of doing this full time (granted I already do more than 40 hours a week). If you find my work valuable and you can afford it, please consider subscribing. Much love to you all!

@AFLFrontOffice Maybe this year although I’ve seen him win one on ones this year against some very strong quality players this year. He will be in high demand at the end of the year.
Essendon will be in the market for another key defender you would have to think. Jordon Butts is a quality free agent and Essendon aren’t short on cash.
Shattering blow at Essendon.
Young key defender Lewis Hayes has suffered another ruptured ACL.
Was only playing his first VFL match back on the weekend, returning from the same injury he sustained on AFL debut last year
@7NewsMelbourne@7AFL
@AFLFrontOffice For me he has shown to be a very good one on one defender and plays certainly more physical than any Essendon Key Defender. He won’t be short of suitors from competing clubs.
14 goals in the last 3 games for former bomber Kaine Baldwin playing at Port Melbourne. Good to see him performing well after a horror run of injuries, still one of the more talented key forwards id seen at 16s level.
