Finally, I instinctively distrust people who made it using a certain pathway but tell others not to follow that same pathway. I know too many doctors/lawyers/tenure track profs who tell others not to go to med school/law school or get a Ph.D.

Surely @NateSilver538 is smart enough to know that many of the wealthiest private schools charge low/middle-income families less than most public schools.

Just go to a state school. The premium you're paying for elite private colleges vs. the better public schools is for social clout and not the quality of the education. And that's worth a lot less now that people have figured out that elite higher ed is cringe.

Many small colleges also do a better job of graduating students. Given the overall low college graduation rates (~60%), I’d encourage students to go where they’ll be supported rather than just where they see the lowest sticker prices.
