What is Hantavirus?

“Hanta” (or more fully “Hantaan”) comes from the Hantan River in South Korea.

In 2024, Moderna quietly partners with Korea University on an mRNA-based Hantavirus vaccine.

The first hantavirus (Hantaan virus) was isolated in the late 1970s from striped field mice near Hantaan River. It was linked to outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever among soldiers during the Korean War (1950s). The virus and the broader group were named after the river/location where it was discovered. This virus existed for 70 decades, but Big Pharma hasn’t made big money from it.
