Last week in Honolulu we had the privilege of representing the education sector at the KASL-KALGOV Climate Security Discussions. This meeting, hosted by the Kwajalein Atoll Sustainability Laboratory, was a first step toward developing a holistic and cross functional model for climate disaster mitigation that includes representation from the Department of Defense, Department of State, Higher Education, NGOs, and most importantly, the Marshallese leadership.

DoD research indicates that the Marshall Islands will be uninhabitable due to sea level rise by as early as 2035 and no later than 2065. This harsh reality of an entire culture facing the loss of their homeland in less than a generation presents an opportunity for the world to help, and to learn. While the Marshall Islands may be the first to experience the most severe impacts of climate change, they won’t be the last.

At EOA, we are particularly interested in uncovering what can be done to preserve culture, stories, and methods within the school system. If we can empower Marshallese teachers with instructional methods and technology tools that both dignify the Marshallese experience by counting the preservation effort as valid and valuable academic work, and offering a tangible platform for the archival of cultural artifacts, we’ll achieve our goal of helping.

By connecting students through Building Cultural Bridges we aim to have students build 21st Century Skills in leadership, collaboration, and empathy to prepare them for the modern workforce.

These students at Ke Kula ‘O ‘Ehunuikaimalino, a Hawaiian Immersion school in Kailua-Kona are responding to their new pen pals from Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota. Our hope by connecting these cohorts through the Building Cultural Bridges Program is for students and teachers to learn new ways to preserve and share their culture, language, and customs for generations to come.
