It’s been a pleasure and absolute privilege to lead @Results4America’s #RFAStateEdFellows and as we close out Cohort 3, it’s definitely a “see you later” not goodbye.
Also (and this is delightful) Oregon is getting a Dolly Parton Imagination Library program! They mail free books to kids from birth until they enter kindergarten.
@andyjacob@jrlsilverman@PPSConnect@salemkeizer I’d put myself in the “ed policy folks” category not necessarily “smart” and yeah…seems a stretch esp if we are aiming for big changes and ones the reflect Oregonians’ values and center students’ needs (ideally those two things converge…)
@bing_chad1986 I’d love to know the context if I have it wrong.
And I am not here to teacher bash or dissect the hard parts and/or benefits of the profession of which there are many - I am here to hold the Bonilla to her word as a supposed student centered leader; not seeing evidence of that
Wow. This is the union head essentially encouraging teachers to take off days when they are supposed to be making up strike days. Mind blown. “She reminded members that they are able to take personal time, sick time or unpaid leave during the winter break days and do not have to justify those requests to administrators.
“Use your time. It’s yours. Just don’t put up any pictures when you are supposedly sick, please and thank you,” she said. “
@mathteacherjedi @ericlerum Students will still get a full week, just not two full weeks. I don’t know the national data but two weeks is long and most workers don’t have that first week of anyhow.
Student Rep. Frankie Silverstein asking whether the student survey suggesting unhappiness w/ winter break was a scientifically random sampling, and inclusive of students who might prefer to stick with the winter break option.
Board member Andrew Scott, w/a stuffed llama for good measure (IYKYK) on a tear. This was the wrong fight—the target should be Salem: Ed reform, revamp local option levy, get rid of the kicker. Everyone who texted him in fury he says should focus that energy on statewide change
@PasilCerie @BrimJulia@PPSConnect That’s shitty for kids and only going to further erode trust. I think teachers really lost out here and that’s on Bonilla.
@writeo@BrimJulia@PPSConnect I appreciate the frustration over missing scheduled vacations, but perhaps something PAT should have thought about before dragging this thing out. Most adults work that week and kids need to extra 1st semester hours.
@la_louve_rouge_@pdxteachers Respectfully, two sides to the story. I know of teachers withholding college letters of rec to students who didn’t show up on the line. What lesson is that teaching?
Story has been fleshed out, but there is a lot more to absorb. I also agree that framing this as "who won/lost" is a mistake and I will try harder to avoid that. We all lost something in Nov. Silver lining is maybe this forces a sober statewide conversation on $ for schools.
