A 22-year-old woman was burned at the stake in the Kingdom of Kongo in 1706, holding her newborn son.
Her crime was preaching that Jesus and the saints had been African.

Kimpa Vita. Also called Dona Beatriz. Kongo had been Catholic for two centuries by then. It was also being torn apart by civil war and by the slave trade eating its population.

She emerged as a prophet with a message that was both religious and political: that the kingdom should reunite, that the wars should end, and that the holy figures the missionaries preached about had been Black and had walked in Kongo.

Thousands followed her. She led people back to the abandoned capital and began rebuilding it.

Capuchin missionaries and a rival king declared her a heretic. She was tried and burned alive, with her infant, on 2 July 1706.

Her movement outlived her for years. And her theology — that the sacred could look like the people who worshipped it — turns up again and again across the diaspora for the next three centuries.

Twenty-two years old. Burned for saying God looked like her.

Marla Gibbs is 95 and she's not done working.

She didn't even start acting until she was in her 40s. Before that, she spent over a decade as a reservation agent at United Airlines.

Most people know her as Florence Johnston on The Jeffersons, the maid with the sharpest mouth on TV, earning her five Emmy nominations across 11 seasons. Then came 227, where she ran her own show as star and producer, with Hal Williams playing her husband on screen, and her real best friend off it.

Decades later, both are still going strong. "As long as I'm working, I'm feeling like 30," she said.

95 years old. Still here. Still working.

Just a few years ago, Olha Yehorova was training people at a gym and lifting barbells. Then came the morning of February 24, 2022, and her life changed completely.

Olha is from Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region. A Master of Sport in weightlifting and a fitness trainer, she had made sports a major part of her life for many years. On the first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion, she joined the defense of the Kyiv region.

In the military, she had to start almost from scratch. First came paperwork, then training. Olha wanted a combat position and proved that she was capable of serving alongside everyone else. Eventually, she became a riflewoman. Her call sign is “Vysota” — “Height.”

In 2023, during a combat mission, a shell exploded nearby. Shrapnel struck her abdomen. Olha recalled how people would avert their eyes when they saw her wound. But completely different thoughts were running through her mind: Would she survive? Would she ever be able to have children? What would her life be like after surgery?

After the operation came a long rehabilitation. And then something happened that says a great deal about Olha: she gradually began training again even before the wound on her abdomen had fully healed. After rehabilitation, she returned to military service.

Then came another injury. And once again, she returned.

At the end of 2024, Olha was offered an entirely different challenge. Together with four Ukrainian service members and veterans who had lost legs and used prostheses, she was to climb Mount Kilimanjaro — the highest mountain in Africa.

Only a few months remained before the expedition, and Olha trained between combat missions. At the end of January 2025, the team began its ascent.

Four days climbing upward. Altitude, cold, thin air, exhaustion.

On February 1, they made it: 5,895 meters above sea level. At the highest point in Africa, five Ukrainians unfurled the blue-and-yellow flag.

Once, Olha trained people in a gym. Then she stood up to defend Ukraine. She survived a severe injury, surgery, and rehabilitation — and returned to service. And then she climbed to almost 6,000 meters.

“I am here for the people around me. And as long as they keep fighting, I will keep fighting too.”

That is how Olha Yehorova explains why she kept returning to service after being wounded.

Her call sign is “Vysota” — “Height.”

And perhaps, after everything she has been through, it would be difficult to imagine a more fitting one.

He repeatedly urged Ukrainian President Zelensky to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries during their call, citing their impact on rising global diesel prices, Axios reports.
