WHY ARE WE USING PRIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PERFREOMACES AS A KEY METRIC FOR THIS WEEK'S HANDICAPPING?
We will have roughly double the number of wedges than typical PGA Championship venues this week which rewards an entirely different skill set compared to the driver + long iron venues we have had the last five years.
Most major venues are big ball parks, with an emphasis on long irons, and as a result of this homogenized course layout at PGA and US Opens, you can use past majors to handicap upcoming events. But the course is so different this week I think it renders that angle of research relatively meaningless.
Over the last 12 months,
- Top 20 SG from 200+ only has 2 names who are also Top 20 in SG from <150 out the rough.
- Top 20 SG from 200+ only has 3 names who are also Top 20 in SG from 100-150 in the fairway
Guys who typically play well at long major venues are going to have find other avenues to score as they have significantly less opportunity to separate themselves from the field with their mid-long irons.
