Sometimes random people will see me at a funeral or shopping mall and ask, “where is that your small boy”.
Police will stop me at a checkpoint and ask, “where’s that your boy”….
Well…
Back to July 2020. I saw on a WhatsApp group page, a 9-year-old boy presenting sports. I instantly believed was destined for greatness.
I enquired on his whereabouts. He was in a village of Assin Kwamoabeng. I asked that he be brought to Accra on my sports show. He was so good Dr Kwaku Oteng watched and suggested if I could drive to his village the next day to ask his parents to allow the boy move to Accra to live with me and school under his sponsorship.
The drive to the village and the curcumstances of the village meant that what I had thought were struggles of my childhood was instead luxury. No motorable road, no electricity, no mobile network, no television and less than five mud houses. He had just completed stage six and was the best student in the village.
The JHS was miles away from his village so like thrir dad, most of his nine siblings ended up as hunters & farmers, after class six. Because the daily trek to the next two towns to pursue upper primary education was an obstacle.
But this boy was coming to the city of Accra. The parents allowed and he cane with us.
The real challenge was getting a quality school in Accra. The boy was naturally smart but the level of education in the small village of Assin Kwamoabeng Primary meant he was miles apart with his peers in the city.
Some of the schools demanded entrance exams. Most of the questions were things he had never been taught or read before in his life.
In the end, they can’t admit him and those that would admit him on condition he’s moved further lower in class.
One of the best schools in Accra saw beyond his patent defects and admitted him. The beginning was tough but with encouragement and extra work, he gradually caught up. He had never seen a computer before when be came but in few years, he was leading coding sessions in class.
Yesterday, he graduated, receiving one of the top students awards.
Ladies and Gentlemen, “Professor” Dominic Fobih is a graduate and a computer “shark”.
Solomon’s journey to healing has begun, with his first check-up complete and surgery scheduled soon.
I am grateful to #dr_sweets_s and #roselynfelli for their care. We’re documenting every step to share his story and inspire others. #BoysLivesMatterToo
😊🙏❤️
Empowering girls is vital, but we must not neglect boys. They, too, need mentorship, emotional support, and life skills. Let’s raise balanced men by supporting the boy child.
