Rachel Reeves has told Labour MPs tonight that they have to sacrifice the well-being, health and even lives of pensioners to the demands of the City of London for proof that Labour are fiscally tough. Except, the City isn’t demanding it does so. So what is really going on?
The Department exposes the bureaucratic violence of the DWP.
After years researching the stories of 12 people who died, disabled journalist @johnpringdns describes how bereaved families and disabled people have fought for justice and accountability: https://t.co/j8Urjpray2
@DPACSheffield@AtomsDNA@arusbridger I'm not going to row about this, people can have different takes without making it personal! EM's takeover is a more dangerous development than people are giving it credit for and I think Alan's article responds proportionately & with some good ideas abt how to respond. x
@DPACSheffield@AtomsDNA@arusbridger Ultra-right forces now own this platform & set its algorithms! Agreeing with Alan's article on a very dangerous development in ownership of soc med isn't the same as validating Alan & the liberal press! It is saying he has written a good article about dealing with this problem.
@DPACSheffield@AtomsDNA@arusbridger 🐦 has been bought out by hostile parties, there really is no call for getting angry with me abt it. Obviously it's a disaster for people who've built up their work here but turning a blind eye to what's happened by using it regardless is imo sending the wrong message & unwise.
@AtomsDNA@DPACSheffield@arusbridger Not going to row abt it, others are entitled to their take. I recommend reading Alan's article because it addresses some of the concerns abt abandoning this platform. Personally I'm v uncomfortable with minimizing risk of letting EM take ownership of online activism/our data.
@AtomsDNA@DPACSheffield I'm making a general observation abt X, why I'm on here occasionally is none of your business tbf. Other platforms have their probs but are considerably less dangerous than EM. I largely agree with @arusbridger's recent article/solution & think turning a blind eye here is unwise.
So #DWP has just published stats on #UniversalCredit migration notices sent out between July 2022 and Feb 2024. More than a third of individuals did not claim UC and their legacy benefits were closed.
This is hugely concerning, isn't it @stephenctimms?

"Only last week, DNS reported that three deaths of disabled people who took their own lives were linked to flaws within the universal credit system, despite DWP previously dismissing fears about the safety of “vulnerable” claimants as “misplaced”..."👇
The Department is out this week, so I'm visiting relatives of #DWP's victims who trusted me with their stories, to hand-deliver copies. Peter Carré's son Stephen was an early victim of the fit for work test. Peter helped DNS expose the harm it was causing.

Austerity is still austerity, even under a Labour govt.
Well said.
Slavery to defunct economic theories, cuts to public investment, winter fuel payments, child welfare; favouring wealthy elites won't rejuvenate the economy.
Must abandon Tory policies.

Labour hiding data on how many people Tory-led DWP killed.
300,000 deaths since 2010.
Almost half of disabled people claiming benefits attempted suicide.
Can't build better society by concealing social murder.
Need humane govt policies.

RIP Alain Delon (1935-2024)
He was one of the coolest & most handsome actors ever, but sometimes I feel that his acting ability is underappreciated. His presence on screen alone is enough to make people watch a film.
You all know how much I adore him. He will be sorely missed
The Department is out on Tuesday. I'm visiting relatives of #DWP's victims who trusted me with their stories, to hand them a copy of the book. Alison is Errol Graham's daughter-in-law.
Errol cut himself off from his family. He starved to death after DWP removed his benefits.
