Does #SARSCoV2 damage blood vessels in the brain?
The blood vessels in the brain are surrounded by a protective blood-brain barrier (BBB), a complex structure formed by different cell types. A blood vessel breaking down in the brain causes even more damage than in other regions of the body. BBB disruption allows an influx of toxic blood-derived debris and infectious agents that generally don't get access to the brain. In addition, it leads to extensive neuroinflammatory responses caused by the surrounding cells, which can initiate multiple direct pathways of neurodegeneration.
