I don’t disagree that social media can have a negative impact on kids, but that alone doesn’t justify a blanket ban.
The 48% figure also needs context. Was it a representative sample? How many children were surveyed? Was it self-reported? If it’s based on a focus group or polling commissioned by the same people pushing the policy, it’s not something you can confidently generalise to every child.
More importantly, identifying a problem doesn’t automatically validate the proposed solution. Plenty of things can be harmful when misused, but we don’t immediately default to government bans. There needs to be evidence that this approach is actually the best way to address the issue rather than alternatives that place responsibility on parents and guardians.
Protecting children is important, nobody is arguing against that. But that’s a parenting responsibility, not something the state should be taking over.
The reality is that we’re moving into a world where almost everything revolves around digital platforms. Limiting access also limits opportunities to learn, network, build skills, and even careers. Long term, that could leave the next generation less prepared than their peers in countries that don’t impose the same restrictions.
Productivity in Britain is already poor as it is, this will essentially rule us out of ever breaking that mold going forward with the new generation.
It’s not really about spending more money, though. Tournaments themselves are inherently unprofitable, so Ubisoft’s investment is better viewed as a contribution to the esports ecosystem, supplemented by revenue from event partners.
Before expanding further, they need to consolidate the foundation that the esports scene is built on. The priority should be developing it into a sustainable and respected franchise rather than pushing for growth too early.
That also means providing greater organisational support, but with mandatory deliverables attached. Teams and organisations should be required to meet clear benchmarks and obligations in order to unlock that support.
