Mapping Proteins in African Genomes – New Clues for Type 2 Diabetes 🧬

A new study led by #HelmholtzMunich, reveals how genetic and proteomic data from African populations can uncover previously unknown biological pathways in type 2 diabetes. Their work addresses a long-standing gap by studying a population grossly underrepresented in medical research.

💡 By analyzing blood plasma proteins in a Ugandan cohort, researchers identified 18 proteins with a likely causal link to #T2D – including targets for existing drugs. Several protein patterns were unique to African ancestry, highlighting the need for population-specific diagnostics and treatments.
The findings could pave the way for earlier and more accurate #Type2Diabetes diagnoses, as well as treatments tailored to African populations.

💬 “By focusing on African populations, we are uncovering biological insights that have been missing from global diabetes research. This work shows that a one-size-fits-all approach to diagnosis and treatment is not enough – we need solutions that reflect the diversity of human biology.”
– Dr. Opeyemi Soremekun, first author of the study and former Humboldt Research Fellow at Helmholtz Munich.

💬 “Our findings lay the groundwork for future clinical applications, from improved diagnostic markers to potential therapeutic targets. By embracing genetic diversity in research, we can move closer to precision medicine that works for all.”
– Prof. Eleftheria Zeggini, Director of the Institute of Translational Genomics at Helmholtz Munich

The team plans to expand the research to more African populations, aiming to close equity gaps in #GlobalHealth and move toward #PrecisionMedicine for all.

Eleftheria Zeggini Appointed to the ERC Scientific Council 🎉

The European Commission has appointed Prof. Eleftheria Zeggini to the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC) – the ERC’s governing and decision-making body.

Prof. Zeggini is the Founding Director of the Institute of Translational Genomics at #HelmholtzMunich and a TUM Liesel Beckmann Distinguished Professor at the Technical University of Munich, School of Medicine and Health.

🔬 Eleftheria Zeggini’s research focuses on translational genomics, with an emphasis on developing and applying statistical and computational methods to integrate molecular, genomic, and epidemiological datasets. She uses approaches such as large-scale GWAS to study complex diseases like type 2 diabetes and osteoarthritis, aiming to uncover shared mechanisms that drive their development and progression.
Her goal is to translate these insights into better prevention strategies and more personalized treatment approaches.

💬 “It is an honor to join the ERC Scientific Council. I look forward to contributing to its mission of supporting frontier research and fostering scientific excellence across Europe.”
– Prof. Eleftheria Zeggini

💬 “Helmholtz Munich is committed to scientific excellence and regards the ERC as a cornerstone of EU research funding. Eleftheria Zeggini’s appointment is a testament to her outstanding scientific achievements and leadership in science. This recognition by the ERC Scientific Council underscores the global impact of her work.”
– Prof. Martin Hrabě de Angelis, Member and Spokesperson of the Executive Board (acting) at Helmholtz Munich

The ERC Scientific Council is composed of distinguished scientists and scholars representing the European research community. Its members define the ERC’s scientific strategy and select peer-review evaluators – shaping the future of frontier research in Europe.

Helmholtz Munich Launches Pioneering Osteoarthritis Research Project With EU Partners

#HelmholtzMunich is part of #PROBE, a new EU-funded initiative aiming to transform how #osteoarthritis is diagnosed and treated. The project is supported by Horizon Europe through the Innovative Health Initiative and has a total budget of €26 million – €1.4 million of which is allocated to Helmholtz Munich.

🧬 Building the foundation for #PersonalizedMedicine
Osteoarthritis affects more than 500 million people worldwide. PROBE will integrate data from over 70 million individuals – enabling AI-driven analyses, predictive models, and innovative clinical study designs that pave the way for more precise diagnostics and tailored therapies.

🔍 Accelerating clinical impact
The consortium of 38 partners brings together expertise in #AI, data protection and ethics. The project aims to establish innovative endpoints, enhance therapy evaluation, and support shared decision-making for patients and clinicians.

💬 “With PROBE, we are uniting expertise and data across Europe to take osteoarthritis research to the next level. AI-powered analyses of federated multimodal data at unprecedented scale provide the foundation for personalized therapies and more efficient clinical trials – all with the clear goal of sustainably improving the quality of life for the hundreds of millions of people affected.”
– Prof. Eleftheria Zeggini, who leads Helmholtz Munich’s contribution to PROBE
