The real price at which most people, especially Africans, purchase knowledge is the ability to think for themselves. They give up this ability to acquire knowledge.

By the time they complete university education of whichever level, they take pride in citing authorities, and find particular satisfaction in using the exact language that was used by these authorities.

You can't blame them since, throughout the education system, they were rewarded for knowing and reproducing the thoughts of other people, and for reproducing these thoughts in the very wording in which they read them. For instance, to get full marks in mechanics, they had to state Newton's laws, using the exact words used by the scientist.

Therefore, to be an African intellectual means to have the ability to echo the thoughts of other people. Those who have good memories and can echo more of these thoughts are considered the top intellectuals. The typical African graduate knows much more than Socrates and Archimedes knew, but doesn't have even 1% of their thinking capacity. They traded the thinking capacity for knowledge.

Even in the days of Newton and Galileo, there were "intellectuals" whose place it was to echo the thoughts of others, instead of thinking for themselves. It's such intellectuals that led the charge against Galileo when he said that the earth moves around the sun. His words ran counter to the words of the authorities whom they always echoed, and they had to therefore fight him.

Unfortunately, such "intellectuals" are too many in modern Africa. They echo authorities and will wildly protest if anyone says anything that doesn't tally with the things they have crammed over the years.

I see them here on Twitter. They respond to my posts by citing what X and Y said, as if I am supposed to care. This page carries my own thoughts. I am an original thinker. I refused to pay the price that most of you paid for knowledge. I post my own thoughts and my hope is always that, if anyone is to respond, they will respond with their own thoughts. But no, they cite this book and the other theory, showing much capacity for memory but little capacity for original thought.

It doesn't matter if you sell furniture like @ModernLivingEA or install pit latrine. You can get customers in new industries by professinalising the service you are providing...

1) Make the customer experience seamless. Most electricians don't pick the phone, don't have a website, don't accept cards, come to sites looking shabby, don't have an office, show up on a beat up boda and the list goes on and on.

Markets where folks are not up to standards (i.e. carpenters, tailors, plumbers, electricians) are great markets because the differatiators are quite cheap and super straight forward. People also have a lot of nightmare stories so they will be very excited if you prove them wrong...

2) Be findable and document your journey. Are you on the social media platforms? Create content around your project, your story, educate your people. Test what works and double down on it.

"I don't have money for marketing" is a lazy excuse.

Did you post on X today? Did you update your status on WA? Get going. Become the "guy" in your industry...

3) Make it easy to get referrals and new clients. Give customers your business cards, engage them post-service delivery, maintain a database of clients and wish them happy birthday, etc. There are so many levers you can pull. Ask them for referrals if they were happy with your service, they will give it to you...

This post got me fired up, if I had time, I would start an electrical installation company and use those principles...

Flew from Rome (CIA) to London (STN) on Ryan Air, for the first time.

The airfare for the 2 hour and 40 minute flight was as low as €18 ($20) if booked in advance. My airfare was higher at €60 ($67) due to last minute booking. The flight had a full load.

In Africa a comparable flight costs significantly more especially in places like Nigeria. For instance, a one-way flight from Lagos to Abijan on the Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, lasting less than two hours, costs 2,400% more compared to the lowest airfare from Rome to London.

African airlines and aviation policy makers should take note how airlines and airports are innovating around the world, delivering great results for customers and boosting overall economic growth. Democratizing African air travel by effectively implementing “African open skies” under the African Union’s (AU) Single African Air Transport Market (SATAM) agreements, promoting collaboration amongst African carriers and removing operational barriers, should be the goal. Air travel has to be affordable to millions of Africans and not just for a few.

Ryan Air, based in Ireland, can fly anywhere in the European Union (EU) without any regulatory restrictions under the EU’s Single Aviation Market agreement. Unfortunately African carriers still need BASAs and face other bureaucratic impediments preventing them from flying unrestricted within AU member countries.

Note: Yes, Ryan Air, as a no frills ultra LCC, charges extra for everything— €55 to check-in at the counter, €70 for 1st checked luggage, €31 for carry-on and €10 for seat selection. Still, the base fare is very affordable especially considering the current high jet fuel prices.
