After 50 grueling bombing missions, 1st Lt. Charles Wardwell still smiled as he awaited his next orders.

He entered the Army as a Pvt, earned his commission through OCS, & became a B-17 pilot, flying the “Flying Fortress” into the heart of the enemy’s defenses.

Three times his plane was shot to pieces, but on his 25th mission over Italy in October 1943, rocket & cannon fire left the bomber unflyable.

Charles lashed the control column with severed cable, used a .50-cal shell as a lever, & somehow nursed the crippled ship back from 23,000 feet, landing safely after ordering his crew to bail out.

Of his original crew that flew with him from the States, he was the only survivor.

He pressed on over Tunisia, Sicily, France, Germany, & Bulgaria while earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, 10 Air Medals, & a Bronze Star.

A true Flying Fortress of a man. Charles Wardwell passed away at 98 years old in 2016.
