On Dec. 9, 1956, Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 810-9 was on its way from Vancouver to Calgary. On board were 62 people, including five CFL players.
Near Chilliwack, the plane crashed into Mount Slesse.
The remains of the aircraft are there to this day.
This is the story.

At 6:10 p.m., Flight 810-9 left Vancouver and was assigned to fly in the Green 1 air lane towards Calgary. Allan Clarke, a former bomber commander during the Second World War, was flying the plane. By 6:55 p.m., the plane had climbed to 5,900 metres near Cultus Lake.

Among the passengers were five CFL players on their way home from the annual Shrine Game. The players were Melvin Becket, Mario DeMarco, Gordon Sturtridge and Ray Syrnyk with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They were joined by Calvin Jones from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Normie Kwong was supposed to be on the plane but remained in Vancouver to spend time with his future wife. Around 7 p.m., there was a fire warning indication in the inner port engine. Clarke asked for approval to fly on Airway Green 1 back to Vancouver.

This was approved but instead of making a left, he made a right turn. Clarke radioed air traffic control and was given clearance to descend to 2,400 metres. At 7:11 p.m., the plane disappeared from radar. The last known location was near the 2,600 metre Mount Silvertip.

The crash site was not located until May 1957 when it was found by mountaineers Elfrida Pigou, Geoffrey Walker and David Cathcart. Located on the third peak of Mount Slesse, investigators found the plane had slammed into the mountain at near full speed.

The wreckage remains at the site but a memorial has been erected in Chilliwack. The DeMarco-Becket Memorial Trophy was donated to the CFL by the families of Mel Becket and Mario DeMarco. It is awarded to the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award.
