Today is a reminder, a painful one, that democracy is fragile. To preserve it requires people of good will, leaders with the courage to stand up, who are devoted not to pursuit of power and personal interest at any cost, but to the common good.
Trump supporters, driven by a baseless conspiracy theory fomented by the president himself, have stopped the functioning of government and the normal processes of the peaceful transition of power.

The U.S. Capitol was breached today for the first time since 1814, when the British attacked it and set it on fire during the war of 1812, according to the director of scholarship and operations with the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. How shameful.
This isn’t a peaceful protest. This is an attack on our democracy and domestic terrorism to try to stop certifying elections. This should be treated as a coup led by a president that will not be peacefully removed from power.
I covered a lot of BLM protests in D.C. last year (tear gassed several times, hit with a rubber bullet) and the difference here in terms of the police response to property damage and violence is astounding.
“Stand back and stand by?” “Stop the steal?”
We have a criminal president who has incited violence. He wanted this. Our country cannot heal until he and his spineless enablers are held criminally accountable for their actions. Justice demands it.
"Remain peaceful"? They've already breached the building, there is an armed standoff and leadership has been evacuated as reinforcements are being rushed to the scene. Nothing peaceful about what's happening.
I was on the floor but I am safe with my brave staff. What we are witnessing is an attempted coup directly incited by the criminal in the White House. It will fail.
White privilege is on display like never before in the U.S. Capitol.
If these people were Black. . .well, we all know what would be happening right now to them.
Republicans in congress cowering under their desks as violent men roam the hallways finally understand what they've put every school kid in America through.
After encouraging protests, President Trump tweets to supporters to "stay peaceful" amid violent clashes and breach of Capitol building that has forced halt to Electoral College proceedings.

This is what domestic terrorism looks like.
This is Donald Trump’s America.
Imagine the police response if these were Black people BREAKING INTO the Capitol.
If you don’t see white supremacy and a total threat to democracy when you see this, it’s because you don’t want to.
