When the Yorùbá wish to identify you before other people, they call your father's name. But when they seek divine insight on your behalf, they call your mother's name.

This tradition reflects a profound understanding of identity. In the human world, lineage is often traced through the father and one's paternal name serves as a public identity. It tells people who you are, where you come from and the family to which you belong.

However, when approaching the spiritual realm through divination, the mother's name takes precedence. This is not a coincidence but a recognition of the sacred bond between mother and child. The mother is the vessel through which life enters the world and in Yorùbá cosmology, she is intimately connected to the spiritual foundation, destiny and life force of her child. Invoking the mother's name acknowledges that deeper connection when seeking guidance from the unseen.

This is why it is often said:

"Òrìṣà mọ Òrìṣà."
The Òrìṣà know the Òrìṣà.

The divine recognizes what human eyes cannot always perceive. While society may know your family name, the spiritual realm knows your essence. Human beings identify you by your earthly lineage but the divine encounters you through the deeper currents of your spiritual origin and destiny.

This saying reminds us that identity has two dimensions: the one the world sees and the one the spirit knows. The first may open doors in society but the second reveals purpose, alignment and destiny before the Divine.

By learning and reciting these powerful words, we not only pay homage to the Òrìṣà but also tap into their blessings, support, protection and all their ire(goodness).

May Olódùmarè, our Ori, Ẹgbẹ́, Eégún(ancestors) grant us strength needed to overcome our adversaries and emerge victorious in all our battles.... Àṣẹ Èdùmàrè!!!!
