It still concerns me that the only direct consultation with marginalised groups on the #AssistedDyingBill has been the tiny bits I’ve done
I summarise the key findings here
MPs must not take the silencing of these groups as reassurance
#AssistedDying@politicshome
As @ddhitchens notes, not all hospice doctors are ‘anti’ assisted dying. But the strength of feeling among the hospice workforce about this legislation, and the unintended consequences (for patients, staff and the wider sector) outlined in this piece, can’t be ignored.
I think also there’s been
ambiguity about what people can say so many staff working in the hospice sector have erred on the side of caution.
And fear about what they say being taken out of context ie you must be anti or you must be pro
But I agree with @nmdacosta tho- the silence has been costly, esp for those people who are most likely to be harmed by the insufficient safeguards…whose voices are structurally silenced…who needed the sector to speak up
The fact this piece was needed, with many choosing to take part anonymously, highlights why as citizens we should feel uncomfortable w the process of this bill

The rejection of the amendment to allow hospices & care homes to opt out of assisted dying will have complex impact
One that shouldn’t be overlooked is the impact on those who are fearful of being pressured into AD and so will be fearful of accessing these places of care…and in the case of hospices gold-standard care for those with the most sig need
We can’t avert our eyes from the needs of such groups&only consider those who want AD
There is lots we can do to bridge this gap but so far supporters of the #AssistedDyingBill seem to be sticking to minimising any concerns
Our letter in @thetimes highlights this
And as always I’m happy to discuss how this can be done @kimleadbeater 🙏🏽
Important letter in @thetimes from @JamillaHussain1 and others about the risks the Terminally Ill Adults Bill poses to marginalised groups.
“Legislation that aims to offer dignity in death must not deepen inequality in life”
The lower proportion of people form ethnic minority communities accessing assisted dying maybe due to inequities of access
*BUT* it also could be because they don’t want it
Also most jurisdictions who have legalised AD don’t collect ethnicity data…
And I’d genuinely be grateful if someone can show me the evidence that the biggest risk to ethnic minority groups in the context of AD legalisation is the risk their families will coerce them out of it… I can’t find any robust (…or even somewhat reasonably ok methodologically) analysis on the impact on marginalised ethnic groups
THE biggest risk from our consultation across multiple ethnic groups is they’ll be scared to access palliative care services… rejection of Amendment 441 to allow hospices (and care homes) to opt out has increased this risk.
That is sadly how serious the committee has to date considered the risk to this group.

As MPs we must be conscious of creating a new and legal way for domestic abuse perpetrators to abuse - and, ultimately, kill - their victims.
I’ve written an article with @STagainstDA_ CEO Cherryl Henry-Leach in @politicshome 👇
I would love to say coercion is so vanishingly rare we can ignore this
But sadly, as hard as it is to stomach, that is not the case-if anything abuse and coercion get worse as the victim enters the last months of life
And safeguards/training we currently have in place are insufficient to protect victims-900 women die from suicide every year due to domestic abuse. Racialised women are more at risk.
And if WE are creating a new avenue of abuse then it is OUR responsibility to do whatever is needed to create the safety victims need
And no, mandatory training for assessors is not sufficient
You need people with expertise on assessing for coercion, whose day job is doing just that, as part of the assessing team
Because it’ll be much harder to detect at the ‘assisted dying’ stage and the risks of missing it unacceptable (I think anyway)
Yes that makes it more costly and complex to operationalise
But that’s the reality #AssistedDyingBill
