Towards European Licensing of Small Modular Reactors - An European research project aiming to identify and remove obstacles hindering the deployment of SMRs.
Presenting ELSMOR project at ”Euratom Research in Action and Opportunities for Europe: EU Strategic Autonomy and the Future Energy Systems” meeting in Brussels.
Similar framing appeared in USA in mid-2010s, now with Russian aggression it seems the issue is topical also in EU.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our workshop this week, both in person and online! You can find a small write-up of the event here.

Roberta Ferri of SIET shows some images of the experimental setup built at the SIET facility. Always nice to see concrete (or, in this case, metal) work.
To learn more about TANDEM that will be taking some of the learnings of ELSMOR forward and look more directly at SMRs as a part of hybrid energy systems, the projects website is now public: https://t.co/ZUiANDEfjJ
The second day of our workshops has started with 4 separate rooms going through the findings of ELSMOR and discussing them. Pictured is Nils Reinke from GRS discussing the results of modelling the passive safety features of SMRs.
And for the final room, we have Frans Davelaar of @EDFofficiel presenting the eSMR dataset build as a reactor model for the analysis of passive safety functions of SMRs. Also to be used for TANDEM!
Important week for #SmallModularReactors in Brussels
In addition to joint event by EU projects #ELSMOR & #TANDEM, nucleareurope is also participating in Transatlantic Cooperation in SMRs workshop organised by @USTDA & @US2EU with support of European partners over next 2 days
We now have the second day of our ELSMOR / TANDEM workshop with parallel hybrid online/onsite technical sessions. Defence-in-depth, preparation of experimental TH campaign, basis of modelling deck for ”Nuward-like” SMR, uncertainties of thermohydraulic modelling.
Romania aims to construct a six-pack version of NuScale to replace Doicesti coal plant, with option for solar field and H2 production for nearby steel factory.
Lavinia Rizea, atomic energy attachea of permanent representation of Romania describes the Romanian ambition on SMRs. Romania operates CANDU reactors but has more need for low carbon energy. They’re collaborating with NuScale for newbuild.
Kattainen tells also of Fortum’s feasibility study on newbuild, as well as on the risks investigated. Collaboration and R&D help with mitigating these risks.
Matti Kattainen from Fortum starts by wishing everyone good Finnish independence day, and continues by describing the history of Fortum’s SMR work. Starting from a small vision to a large project portfolio.
We have one remote presenter, Debbie Francis from EdF presenting the French SMR design, Nuward. Quite a lot of discussion during the day has centered around Nuward design.
Happening now! Joint #ELSMOR#TANDEM workshop dedicated to #smallmodularreactors
On today's agenda:
👉Relevant EU research & Initiatives
👉European SMR pre-partnership
👉Licensing
and much more!
Sylvie Cadet-Mercier from ASN (French nuclear authority) describes the licensing part of SMR pre-partnership project and the Nuward pre-licensing collaboration between the designers and several European regulators.
TANDEM looks both the economic opportunities as well as safety challenges involved when nuclear energy is used for various energy services. They also use E-SMR dataset developed in ELSMOR for safety assessment.
