Microsoft says Windows 11’s Media Player isn’t going away, but it’s still a lot slower than the old one.

According to Windows Latest, the modern Media Player takes around 3 seconds to open and start playing a video, while the legacy Windows Media Player does the same almost instantly.

It also uses about 377 MB of RAM when idle, compared to just 103 MB for the older player.

To make matters worse, support for HEVC videos is locked behind Microsoft’s $0.99 codec pack, while the legacy player can handle those files for free.
