Oil just cracked $100 a barrel again as Iran escalates. Get ready for gas prices to climb.

Now here's the part that should actually make you mad: Canada has the third largest oil reserves on the planet. We're one of the biggest producers in the world.

Canadians are paying around $1.82 a litre right now.

Iran, the country actually at war, sells gas to its own citizens for about 4 cents a litre. Yes, that's a government subsidy propping up a regime running low on cash. But it proves the point: even a country under fire is choosing to shield its people from the price of the oil under their own feet.

Meanwhile New Brunswick's Irving refinery, our largest, runs almost entirely on tankers of foreign crude. Quebec and Ontario aren't much better off. Even Alberta and Saskatchewan, who produce over 90% of our oil, have imported billions in foreign crude themselves because it's cheaper to ship it through the US and back than to move it across our own country.

We sit on one of the biggest oil reserves on earth and we still get hit by the same price spikes as countries with none of it.

That's decades of politicians who never built the pipelines to connect our own country to itself.
