@Cal_O_Shea @MartinSLewis This sounds like it might be this: Contracting out of SERPS (State Earnings Related Pension Scheme) was an option for employees to reduce their National Insurance contributions in exchange for a smaller State Pension. The savings were invested in an alternative pension plan.
