@sarahpow2020 @mohmagableh I think this is the main reason why anyone would want to listen to music that’s recorded instead of live - because technology creates unrealistic expectations so people want the “perfection” of the recording which isn’t always what you get with a live performance #POPMUSF21
@lauraamacinnis While I agree with the point of this thread being that people enjoy live music, I believe some people are forgetting that the statement was people would rather listen to their own music over a COVER band, not the actual artist in concert which is completely different. #POPMUSF21
@sarahpow2020@_Tristanshout_ I really agree with this - it certainly depends on what kind of mood you’re in. When it comes to going out, live music is much more enjoyable (although that might not go for everyone). But sometimes you’re in the mood to just chill and listen to your own music. #POPMUSF21
I think SOME people would rather listen to their own music than a live cover band because some people don’t value live music as much anymore and/or prefer the original version of a song over covers, which could be due to autotune etc. being used to make it sound better #POPMUSF21
@KalebCroix The music itself might be enjoyable to some, but the problem is that these “schlock” artists essentially stole it and appropriated it, and made profit from it with no credit given and no respect for the original artists and their culture. #POPMUSF21
@mercer_caitlyn@brooklynmun I agree with this as well. There is nothing wrong with covering music - many very popular songs today are covers - but credit always needs to be given to the original artist who put in the work to create the music in the first place. #POPMUSF21
Shlock artists were guilty of cultural theft. But they weren’t the first ones- it seems to keep coming up in this course that throughout history white people have stolen/appropriated black peoples’ music, even in the 18th century. The style is what makes it “schlock” #POPMUSF21
@BrandonJarvisMU Yes, definitely. When singers use that raw, passionate voice it makes the listener really feel the emotions they are conveying through their music. #POPMUSF21
@CalebCooperMun I agree that it makes his music very enjoyable to listen to. It’s much nicer to listen to passionate singers than artists who just sing in a boring, monotone voice. When singers have a full, passionate voice it gives you goosebumps. #POPMUSF21
Ray Charles uses a breaking voice to create texture and show passion in his music. He is using vocal techniques from both blues and gospel; he sings in that powerful “chest voice” which is characteristic to blues, as well as melismas and voice breaks from gospel music. #POPMUSF21
@clairemgarland I agree. Some people are so judgemental and think they are somehow better for owning AirPods when there are other options which are just as good, if not better, that cost much less. AirPods are not even about listening to music anymore, they are about looking “cool”. #POPMUSF21
@kilfoy_claudia While streaming has made it easier to access different types of music, before streaming (and even before the internet), it was still possible to find your own music taste without relying on the radio. You just had purchase/listen to records instead of using an app. #POPMUSF21
One way music technology has shaped identities is that generations can identify by how they grew up with music. My parents had vinyl/cassettes; then came CDs; my age had MP3 players/iPods; now streaming online. Some people are biased thinking their way is/was better #POPMUSF21
@lauraamacinnis While songs like this one that have a serious meaning with an upbeat “happy” tune is ironic, it really doesn’t make the music “dumbed-down”. That actually reflects on the listeners for not paying attention to the lyrics, not on the song itself. #POPMUSF21
@mercer_caitlyn I disagree that pop music portrays substance abuse as being able to solve all problems. While a lot of music does mention the use of drugs/alcohol it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s solving their problems. Some songs actually talk about substance use being a problem #POPMUSF21
A false need created by pop music is that people (esp women/girls) always need to be happy, strong & confident (think Beyoncé), which isn’t realistic. I disagree that ALL pop music is dumbed down; some is, but there are also many pop artists who write meaningful music. #POPMUSF21
