After recently reading a book called “A History of SC BBQ” I have become more opened-minded about sauces besides my native mustard. That led to a fun BBQ sauce tasting for our family w/ 6 different sauces to try with BBQ from Hawg Heaven. We had:
-mustard represented by Wises, plus Melvin’s of the Bessinger family,
-SC tomato Carolina Sweet by Hampton Acres of Pelzer (really good & available at Food Lion)
-vinegar/pepper of SC & NC represented by Rodney Scott, one of my favorite Charleston restaurants
-a very tasty SC ketchup from Rodney Scott called Kathy’s.
-NC Piedmont sauce from Black Powder of Jamestown, NC (got it at Ingles in Asheville)

Conclusions: our mustard-raised family found all the sauces to be quite good
—the NC Piedmont sauce (famous in Lexington, NC) was the “surprise” like & received much acclaim.
—vinegar & pepper has some kick if you weren’t raised on it
—it’s not heresy to have something other than mustard 😀
