Takato Yamamoto’s debut in a black and yellow shirt was a complete dream start.

Yes, it was only a pre-season friendly against a fourth-division team, so we shouldn't get carried away. However, the 18-year-old’s technical brilliance and seamless adaptability were simply impossible to look past.

Yamamoto was handed an early opportunity by head coach Niko Kovac due to the club's heavy World Cup absences. He didn't waste a single second. 

Operating as a highly dynamic, creative central midfielder, his technical floor is incredibly high. He plays with great confidence in tight spaces, using exceptionally clean, two-footed footwork to drop his shoulder and glide past pressers. Instead of trying to do everything on his own, his smart link-up play was clear to see right away. He consistently dropped into advanced pockets between the lines to act as a passing outlet, combining fluidly with senior squad members, most notably establishing a highly promising on-pitch chemistry with Serhou Guirassy.

His spatial awareness translated directly onto the scoresheet in the 78th minute. Driving with speed from the right flank, he kept a completely cool head inside the box to slice through the backline and slot home a composed finish to secure the 3-1 victory. 

Adapting to a new country, a new tactical system, and a completely different physical tempo overnight is incredibly demanding, yet Yamamoto looked entirely unfazed. With his inclusion in the upcoming first-team summer tour of Asia, he has a massive platform to prove himself.

The early Shinji Kagawa comparisons are natural for any creative Japanese technician arriving at the Westfalenstadion, and if this debut is anything to go by, BVB has secured a highly fascinating talent.

Seeing a technical Japanese talent arrive at the Westfalenstadion instantly awakens memories of Shinji Kagawa's iconic era.

The 18-year-old central midfielder officially joins BVB on a one-year loan deal from Gamba Osaka. While he is initially integrated into the U23 squad to adapt to European football, his baseline profile, having already made his senior professional breakthrough in the AFC Champions League Two, is highly regarded. 

It is completely fair to hold back on analyzing his specific tactical movements and physical limits until he gets his first minutes on the pitch.

Incredibly excited to see if his style of play will work just as well in Germany.
