Soccer still comes from assoc., as in Association Football. Invented in England.
You’re arguing that calcio is a better name because American football doesn’t kick much. That’s cute, but it has nothing to do with the point.

England had multiple football codes. Rugby Football was football too. Association Football distinguished the FA code, and “soccer” comes from assoc. to soccer.
English slang. Not American.
