Talking #nmtsa & a cognitive motor, function first approach to #musictherapy with #autism & #Neurodiversity with Mary-Clare Fearn & the lovely Joe Thompson on his Baselines in Music Therapy Podcast

Back in Oct @maryclaref13 & I geared up, with the help of the audio tech geniuses at @AIRstudios 🙏 to speak with Joe in for his Australian MT podcast - the very chill but also informative Baselines in MT.
Israel’s President Herzog: “Not since the Holocaust have so many Jews been killed on one day. And not since the Holocaust, have we witnessed scenes of Jewish women and children, grandparents – even Holocaust survivors – being herded into trucks and taken into captivity.”

A choosing chart inspired by one I saw w/ Sadie at #nmtsa for body squeezes as part of MSOTii in support of optimal arousal through rhythmic proprioceptive input #musictherapy#neurologicmusictherapy@ChelWestTherapy
And, a week out, missing the whole team especially the Mom & unofficial but universally accepted Queen of #nmtsa, Cheryl aka ‘HRH’ Butterworth 💖👑🇬🇧
I’ve seen lots of APT - Auditory Perception Training while here - these uke patterns are for exercises to promote integration of auditory with other sensory modalities, in this case using musical cues to practice listening & doing the action that the music relates to🎶
Its official - I’m moving in😄
Not really - but have been office-sitting for Miss Bailey Kracht this week
And borrowing her uke to work out some patterns for APT activities. Thanks Bailey!

Helping broaden my thinking to a more functional use of music w our complex needs cohort - especially when working alongside our #physio colleagues on early development motor skills like head lifting & rolling over

Exploring uses of #rhythm & musical cues for priming the motor system & optimising arousal states in littlies with functional movement goals. In #nmt terms: Patterned Sensory Enhancement.
Thanks @lalaleanna14 for thinking thru some great ideas on this🙏

“The two best hopes for personal growth and happiness are the strengths of our interpersonal relationships, & our love for, & increase of, knowledge.” Gaston, 1968 Music in Therapy p27

What’s your MT training background? Does it align with how you practice /want to practice now? Are you an NMT? If not, what do you think about this system? If so, how do you understand relational aspects of work within this?
Tag / share w someone you’d like to hear from on this!
One of the questions my team asked me to bring to NMTSA was ‘How do the relational elements of music therapy feature in NMT?’, which perhaps indicates the sense of dissonance / incongruence, alienation even, that MTs can experience when encountering NMT.
Reading Gaston has been a helpful link in knowing where different strands of #musictherapy originated, theoretically & geographically, & a step towards better understanding what I think is an unhelpful dichotomy between #nmt & relational mt.
