Resilience in the age of AI means diversifying sources and avoiding dependence rather than full autonomy on everything.

Protecting liberal democracy is not only about preserving our rules. It can ultimately only be achieved through strategic competitiveness. Even if we don’t have leading-edge sovereign AI capabilities just yet, we can still be highly competitive and excel in a wide range of fields.

So there is good reason to be cautiously optimistic!

Europe doesn’t need to win the frontier race for artificial intelligence. But it cannot afford to become dependent on those who do.

AI, becoming a commodity like electricity, needs to be plentiful and secure in supply just for enabling our everyday business, our security and certainly, the strategic competitiveness of Europe. 

Europe holds all the cards it needs. Indeed, we possess significant assets on each layer of the AI stack.

Instead of whining about European disunity, I would rather find it remarkable how such a large number of European countries have steadfastly supported Ukraine and put pressure on Russia over the past four years.

This is the right policy, and something to be proud of. Freedom will prevail!

Russia is escalating against Ukrainian civilians in a war it cannot win. Meanwhile it’s plotting terrorist attacks on allied territory. We need more air defence for Ukraine and sanctions pressure on Russia. To all Russian people: make this senseless killing come to an end.

Germany has attributed the recent failed drone attack near Leipzig to Russia.

We stand in full solidarity with Germany and commend Germany for responding with resolve. 🇫🇮🇩🇪

Russia poses a long-term threat to European and transatlantic security. We support the German proposal of new listings under the EU sanctions regime.

Once again, we wake up to news of people killed in Russian strikes in Ukraine, this time in Bucha.

A terrible flashback to March 2022 and the Bucha massacre. Four years on, Russia has not changed. It continues to deliberately target civilians, violate international law, and pursue maximalist war aims through terror and violence.

Ukraine has reached a significant legal milestone in addressing conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV): a Russian POW has been tried in person and sentenced to the maximum 12-year prison term applicable under the relevant war-crimes provision.

The case is reportedly the first in Ukraine in which a Russian soldier was physically present in court to answer charges of wartime sexual violence.

The UN has so far documented 701 cases of CRSV by Russian forces and authorities since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Most of the victims are men. These figures represent only a fraction of the true scale of wartime sexual violence.

Finland strongly supports Ukraine’s efforts for approaching accountability. Finland also remains committed to the establishment and swift operationalization of the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and the International Claims Commission for Ukraine.

Accountability is an important part of Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, and also for the rules-based international order as a whole.

Russia’s attack on Kyiv last night hit residential areas and a children’s hospital, killing at least 13 people.

Firing dozens of missiles and drones at civilians and civilian infrastructure is not the path to peace. Russia and its leadership must be held accountable for the war of aggression and the damage it has caused.

Congratulations to Estonia on the anniversary of the restoration of its independence. Thirty-five years ago, the Estonian people reclaimed their freedom and began shaping their own future.
