Sometimes, we fall into habits or actions without realizing the weight they carry in the sight of Allah. These common sins, though seemingly small, can have serious consequences. I want to remind you, as I remind myself, to be mindful of them.

One of the most subtle sins we often overlook is the act of gossip. We may speak about others without realizing the harm it causes. Allah says:
"And do not backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it."
(Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:12)
Backbiting is a severe sin that harms both the one speaking and the one being spoken about.

Another common sin is neglecting our prayers. In the hustle of life, it’s easy to miss or delay them. Allah warns us:
"Woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer."
(Surah Al-Ma’un, 107:4-5)
The punishment for neglecting prayer is severe. Let’s never let this vital duty slip.

Lying is another sin that can be easy to fall into. Allah says:
"Indeed, those who fabricate lies are the ones who do not believe in the signs of Allah."
(Surah Al-Nahl, 16:105)
Lying distances us from the truth and Allah’s mercy.

Lastly, mistreating our parents, especially in moments of frustration, is a grave sin. Allah says:
"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship...So be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination."
(Surah Luqman, 31:14)
Our parents have rights over us. Honoring them brings us closer to Allah.

Sister, this is not to burden you, but a reminder for us both. Allah is most merciful, and His forgiveness is vast. Let us purify our hearts, seek His forgiveness, and strive to avoid these sins.

May Allah guide us, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us the strength to stay on the straight path. Ameen.

Shaykh Abul Hasan al-Kurdi taught the Quran for over 70 years in Damascus. He was among the most senior Quran teachers in Syria, with tens of thousands of students across more than 50 countries. At a time when the light of Quranic knowledge was fading in Shaam, it was the Shaykh who helped revive it.
