There is no Calvinist potter in the Bible.

I checked. Every one of them.

Paul did not invent the potter in Romans 9. He quoted it. Five words straight from Isaiah 29:16. So read Isaiah 29. The clay there is hiding its works and saying "Who seeth us?" (29:15) Paul is answering a man who ducked behind God's power to escape his own guilt.

Then read the rest.

Jeremiah 18. The vessel is marred and remade, and God says why: "If that nation... turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil." (18:8)

Isaiah 64. The clay calls the potter Father and asks mercy. It is not rebuked.

Paul's own potter, 2 Timothy 2. How does a vessel become a vessel of honour? "If a man therefore purge himself." (2:21)

Every potter in Scripture relents, frees, listens, or is purged by the man himself. Not one shapes a vessel for the fire and gives the clay no say.

Not even Paul's.

Your post was personal in nature Isaiah. "You types", accusations of self-centeredness, and we like to make it about us. These are not the substantive issue, it is an ad hominem strawman. This is an accusation of motive for why I believe we have a part to play in choosing to obey the Lord.

I don't want to engage further with you on these ideas, because we are talking past each other. I understand how you see me and what I have said, I believe you that that is what you think. Us type huh? You mean your brother in Christ? No one is refuting the glory of the Son or the Father, or "making things about us". This is a non sequitur.

Let's focus on what we agree on maybe, that He is worthy of all glory, and He get's the credit for our salvation and sanctification, because apart from Him we can do nothing.

I can agree with you both on that, and not "other" you. We are of one Body, and in the End, these issues will be clarified by the Lord Himself and we will not care who was right or wrong.

I thought I was nicely offering a differing opinion on the OP, but it seems that this cannot be discussed on here without folks getting polarized. That is unfortunate, I enjoy theological discussion.

Well, I agree the intended audience is Jewish and I have a lot of alignment with Progressive Dispensationalism (though not fully), I think the overly hard distinctions Classical Dispensationalism makes between the Jews and the Gentiles and chopping up what Scripture can apply to who is what is contradictory.

I agree this is not about eternal security, that is my point. It teaches the opposite. It is a warning to Jewish believers not to turn away from God with an evil heart of unbelief. Are you implying the evil heart of unbelief they are warned to not have is something unique to “the Jews”? Only “the Jews” seeking to be “justified” by levitical sacrifices are hardened by sins deceitfulness?

Do the Jews have the ability to choose to believe as this passage teaches but the Gentiles do not they are determined by God to believe? The implications of your hermeneutic creates so many contradictions it is untenable. Unless you hold to the harshest forms of Classical Dispensationalism and think the Jews have a different path to salvation than the Gentiles?

Yep, this is classic, forcing the text to agree with my systematic theology. They aren't really believers, not real brothers, because my theology can't allow them to be.

The plain text is so clear, it is one of many warnings to us as believers... take care BROTHERS, that an evil unbelieving heart won't be in any of you, causing you to TURN AWAY from the living God... encourage EACH OTHER daily... so your heart is not hardened by sin's deception...

Some say understanding Jewish apocalypticism and the historical context of the NT is a form of gnosticism-- some special knowledge that only the intellectually elite can attain.

It's exactly the opposite.

Knowing what Jews actually believed about things like the day of judgment, the resurrection of the dead, the kingdom of God, and Gehenna delivers us from the theological plague of "spiritualizing" everything (which is the real and original gnosticism).

It actually allows us to read the NT in a plain, common sense manner.

Paul summarizes the first advent of Messiah as service to the Jews in order to confirm the hope of Israel. The everlasting covenant is the source of hermeneutical truth. The further you veer from it, the further you drift into delusion.
