@deathbladeISSTH Some of the slower wuxia / xianxia novels that spend time on philosophical ponderings of any sort are also very interesting from this angle. Way of Choices / Ze Tian Ji is the only one I can think of right now.
So I guess I'm seeking specific themes, more so than a genre.
@deathbladeISSTH The biggest draw in xianxia etc for me has been the differences in the culture and values. I've read urban fantasy and science fiction web novels as well, but the thing I'm most interested would be something that really plays with my expectations are preconceptions.
@deathbladeISSTH Warlock of the Magus World was a Chinese take on Western fantasy tropes. I enjoyed it, weird names and all - it was so weird to see the great wizard Merlin ignore the king named Arthur to go romping in a different king's kingdom, not to mention the dread pirate Robin Hood!
@deathbladeISSTH A big part of Skyfire Avenue was a Western scifi-fantasy world seen through Chinese eyes. It was great, and also a bit weird, to see which things were praiseworthy, and which were exaggerated and taken as the most important values.
@BigNerdDrew Nice!
Also, I just realized that at this point, since there's so many different pokemon, you could probably fill up basically any 30 day challenge with just pokemon entries! :D
Sculpt January 01 - Spectral
Not super happy with the result, but it went about as well as I expected. Sculpting and anatomy are both things I struggle with, but then again, that's a good reason to participate in #SculptJanuary
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy I was talking about making good mobile games with actual budgets! It's not that difficult to find a company doing that.
And there are indie success stories too, and after a few big successes, a small studio can start building towards one day releasing a big budget game.
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy When a game requires constant upkeep in server tech, having a hundred skilled people working on updates, with powerful hardware & all the tools, is not hard at all.
I don't know how many people Supercell has in their Clans team. Hundreds?
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy Yes. Freemium.
League of Legends is a big budget game.
Dota II is a big budget game. Hearthstone is a big budget game.
Clash of Clans is a big budget game.
Budget is a number, yes? Independent of revenue model?
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy I'd like to add something here - a few minutes after this, elsewhere in this discussion, you tweeted that anyone working on mobile games who wants to do big budget stuff (โฆ like Diablo Immortal?) is a "fucking idiot".
I think that's abusive, even if it isn't targeted.
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy Unfortunately, I couldn't find a concrete number. However, it'd seem that just the various marketing and upkeep costs of Supercell games are hundreds of millions of dollars a year, plus, you know, the development.
So, yeah.
Big.
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy โฆ Do you think all mobile game developers want to do "quick cash grabs", then? No, of course not. People study game dev with big dreams, then get a job. That job might be mobile. They still have dreams.
Also, mobile is no longer primarily calls / emails.
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy Plus there's the WoW team. It's such an old game, and many of the lowpoly optimisation techniques no longer needed on PC might he useful for mobile.
I doubt Blizzard had to force anyone to make this game against their will.
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy Because as I said, company wants a product, but devs make it - willingly.
This is Blizzard.
There are mobile developers.
Do you have any idea how happy mobile devs would be to work for Blizzard, for a big budget mobile game, for Diablo game?
@foolycoolyLDN @Michael_Goff256 @Hbomberguy 'Tis why:
"...(remember, you are taking the side of the COMPANY, not the devs. The COMPANY is who ultimately makes the decision, and pretending you're on the side of "the devs" is a delusion) is absolutely a reactionary conservative position."
