While, I don't care much for the whether the Benin bronzes are returned or not or are going to be displayed in future in some white elephant project museum or sold for millions, Benin people are the ones who preserved them for centuries, they can do what they like with them.
The Benin bronzes, one of the most, if not the most numerous in African history, in their thousands (?) were found preserved/stored up & were not found in archaeological contexts or through accidental discovery, like the other few handful African bronze works.
All the excavations going on in ife is being Supervised by the Ooni but this Mowaa carried out extensive excavations on their site which is part of the old palace and left out the Benin Traditional Council
People don’t understand how the Oba is fighting for Benin here
Absolutely!
We will not have a museum in our own home that will tell a different story/history from what we have always told.
We will not have a repeat of the Benin-Ife controversy!
All excavations done in Ife is under the supervision of the Ooni and some clowns want a private individual to come and excavate Benin? Such disrespect!
The Oba’s stance on the Benin Royal Museum is rooted in cultural sovereignty, not rivalry. Since time immemorial, the custodianship of Edo heritage has rested with the palace, the living seat of continuity. A museum under the Oba’s authority ensures that the narrative of Benin civilization remains authentic, unfiltered, and directed by its rightful heirs. Heritage is not merely to be displayed; it must be guarded by those whose bloodline carries its memory.
On behalf of my family, friends, and associates, I celebrate and felicitate with His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II on the occasion of his birthday and 9th coronation anniversary.
Your remarkable life and reign on the throne has brought peace to the ancient kingdom of Benin as well as heralded a renaissance of the arts and culture, of which you remain a foremost custodian.
Yours is a refreshing voice of courage in times of uncertainty, and your defence of your culture with diplomatic firmness is a reminder to political leaders why the traditional thrones across our great country continue to be relevant.
I wish you continued good health and many more years of robust leadership to the great people of the Benin Kingdom as well as service to Nigeria as a whole.
Happy birthday and coronation anniversary, Your Royal Majesty. -AA
