We'll be announcing a bunch of super-exciting commissions in the next couple of weeks - for both social practice artists and writers. Keep watching this space for details - and please share with anyone you think might be interested... ❤️
Reviewing @arestlessart's book "A Restless Art", @StephenClift argues we should pay attention to Mike Smith's warning that arts & health must take "The Lantern Road", not the "The Empirical Highway...to probable damnation by way of austerity culture".

Let’s Create An Artist in Every Community (& let’s create it now).
IMAGINE ARTISTS IN EVERY COMMUNITY.
Paid £25k to work full-time with communities to support change.
£3m will pay 120 freelance artists to work with communities for a year. Do the maths!

@ArtMaterialist@SusanJonesArts That’s approx 1330 particpnts engaged regularly over 12 months. This is without special events etc that could add 500 to the figure. And doesn’t cost in potential for contributions in $£€ and resources from community partners 3/3
@ArtMaterialist@SusanJonesArts Theoretically: £25K pa employs 1 x community artist to engage their community for 12 months. This could realistically involve a whole High School (1K particpnts), a June School (200 particpnts), a care home (100 particpnts) and two smaller community groups (30 particpnts) 2/2
Arts, cultural and heritage institutions must not celebrate. Why? Because whilst we get a £1.5 billion "rescue" package, the poorest in our society - those most in need - have not been rescued. They never have been rescued. They've been systematically exploited and betrayed!
Let's therefore make sure we understand:
1) Arts and cultural institutions cannot and do not enable art, and do not help communities develop their cultures. They can play a part, but that's it.
2) People and communities most in need of support will not and never have had any!
The current crisis is creating the conditions to realise #CulturalDemocracyNow.
There is no going back to normal.
The arts and cultural sector cannot go back to its old ways.
