The election of a president in Zambia is not based on regional or tribal quotas. There is no system in which one ethnic group “takes its turn,” nor is there any mechanism by which an entire tribe is barred from the presidency for a century simply because one individual is judged to have failed to meet the benchmark.
This kind of thinking reminds me of a man who once insisted that his daughter would be first and the last in the family to marry a man from tribe X because of alleged mistreatment. Yet by 2022, all three of his daughters were married to men from tribe X. The point is simple: your personal choices cannot — and should not — become other people’s choices.
On the 28th of October 2014, I was attending my late sister in laws funeral at my in laws house in new Kasama, when I received news of the death of late President Michael Chilufya Sata. George Chella, then special assistant to the president for press and public relations had called me from London to inform me of the Presidents passing.
I was then Attorney General aged only 39 years old. That phone call set in motion, perhaps the most eventful three months of my life, and in the first 48 hours of that period, I did not sleep at all. Shortly after that fateful phone call, I walked into then Vice President Guy Scott’s sitting room and called him “your excellency, the acting President”. I explained to him that according to the constitution, immediately his friend and boss, had breathed his last breath, he became acting president by operation of law. What followed that was a succession dispute whose details I cannot go into at the moment because of my oath of office but which tested my very last resolve. I am glad I stood my ground and chose to uphold the constitution as by law established.
It is exactly 10 years since that fateful day and I remember late President Michael Chilufya Sata as a true patriot and pan Africanist whose love for the poor people of this country cannot be questioned. Sadly missed. MHSCRIP
@FabrizioRomano Fletcher and Carrick are incompetent. They should instead get an INDEPENDENT person to act has an interim probably Michael Owen or Ryan Giggs etc.
