Okay #AnthroCon friends, I keep seeing this going around X like mad and I'd like to really push out some safety from me, a medical professional of 17 years who HAS staffed conventions at medical and been in charge of one con.
Water. Electrolytes. Water.
Your body is about 65% water, with some organs using more and some using less. When you start to dehydrate, your body naturally sweats and pulls that water out to the surface of your skin to try to cool you down. Naturally, we all know to drink more water.
HOWEVER: a lot of you will add electrolytes in anticipation of losing some of your electrolytes in the process, AND THAT'S CORRECT! However, you're doing it wrong.
Drink *plain* water first. Restore what your organs are looking for! Water! Once you've put at least a bottle of water down your gullet, *add the electrolytes*. If you still feel dehydrated, follow up with another bottle of water.
If you aren't ready to pee after this, *you are severely dehydrated and should seek medical assistance immediately*. At that point, you're not going to recover it easily.
As for what electrolytes you want to use, that's up to you! Gatorade, Gatorlyte, Pedialyte, Powerade, Coconut Water, Liquid I.V., 100% Juices, (my personal favorite) Propel, and whatever else you can find.
Please, please, please: do this in tandem to help yourself. As someone who works in emergency medicine, I *hate* seeing people needlessly suffer when the solution is right before them.
Also, USGS for this graphic. It's theirs, not mine, but it's great to example and plus people don't read without pictures.
Thank you for coming to my Water/Electrolyte talk.
