Prof Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah says “the grass is greener abroad” is an illusion and Ghanaian youth should stay and build a future here. Stay and build on what, exactly?

You start a small poultry farm of fifty birds in your backyard as a side hustle. The moment they start laying, authorities show up demanding GH₵5,000. Pay up, or you have one month to sell off the birds before they come and confiscate them. That is how “enterprise” begins here.

You want land in Accra and you end up paying for the same plot three or four times to three or four different “owners.” You want a room and the rent is hundreds of times the monthly minimum wage. Food prices are not set by supply and demand. They are set by market queens who will manufacture inflation the moment they smell a chance at gargantuan profit.

You work, you save, you take permits from the same authorities, you build a home. Then they arrive with hammers. Waterway, they say, as if they did not know that when they stamped the permit.

There is no serious plan for people with disabilities, as if they are not part of this society. Teachers can go unpaid for years while parliamentarians, paid like kings, still have the nerve to say they are not well paid. Access to a loan to start a business is a battlefield. Youth who try agriculture get applause and almost no support. A country this size still has no well-structured national irrigation plan so that a young person who wants to farm can do it with some joy instead of prayer and debt.

Where are the opportunities?
How do we believe they exist here when you, our leaders, school your own children in the US, the UK and elsewhere? You built a system you will not use. You have no confidence in the Ghana you keep selling to us.
Life abroad is not paradise. Many struggle. Many never make it. That part is true.

What is also true is this: young people are not running because they hate Ghana. They are running because Ghana blocks the first brick, then lectures them for looking at another plot. Until the harassment stops, the land market is cleaned, rent is livable, farming is supported, permits mean something, and leaders put their own children in the same schools and hospitals they design for us, the grass looking greener on the other side is not an illusion.
