@KassMolly I hadn't followed the story closely, but my main take away is how challenging public consultation is. If a majority of people do not understand that closing a road won't increase congestion or the safety risks, do we still need to listen to them? #TransportGeogMcGill
@KassMolly Another issue is that it might dissuade people from buying used cars, which while worse emissions wise, probably are not as bad as the pollution associated with building an entire new car. #TransportGeogMcGill
@imiliano_dean I think this line of reasoning could help persuade many people to accept congestion charging because it fits in with a capitalist framework.Though that is a double-edged sword because it can be used to argue against subsidized public transit for example. #TransportGeogMcGill
@elevatedrail I can't believe the Volvo driver, they recognize that they could not safely see to pass, still did it, and then act like they did a good job for not killing anyone. Being frustrated or impatient is not an excuse for risking lives! #TransportGeogMcGill
@halamcgill Sounds like a good, but idealistic and challenging plan! I do not expect quick changes, but any progress would be great. If LA is able to solve its car dependency problems, then most other American cities should be able to follow their model. #TransportGeogMcGill
@halamcgill I think that the article is right about Montreal not being ready for congestion pricing yet. Our public transit needs to improve to accommodate those who stop driving, the REM will hopefully help. #TransportGeogMcGill
@sledge_meagan I think businesses using bike lanes will help improve that infrastructure because money talks. If it works out, I hope Montreal takes inspiration! #TransportGeogMcGill
@AMacdonald2211 I work in field with trucks and many are not properly maintained. I have seen trucks take months to be repaired. Large fines are the only way for companies to take notice. Driver exhaustion is also a problem that needs to be solved to increase road safety. #TransportGeogMcGill
@yl_dai_ I think the downsides are clear in the article focusing on mobility, not accessibility. There will only be choice for those who can afford it. #TransportGeogMcGill
I wish this was an Onion article so badly.
I doubt those who can afford this service regularly are those who really need help with accessibility. #transportgeogmcgill

Its not even a loophole, its a purposely designed way for companies to avoid fines and thus continue polluting. Also, more EVs is not better, they don't solve congestion and electricity is not always generated cleanly.

Scooters are still privatized. Bringing scooters under the control of local transit bodies could solve problems (like having scooters be more centralized around transit stations) #transportgeogmcgill

Though we shouldn't celebrate until anything is actually built, this is a step in the right direction. The STM needs to take inspiration because the metro system is dreadfully lacking in this regard!

Engaging with kids is great, but this program is engineering heavy, which is how we got into many of the problems we have today. Without any non-engineer authorities, it will be hard to foster the debate they claim to want to.

It will get some people out of cars, but it is still dependent on phone ownership. I feel like this should not be a priority.

Lots of factors need to be considered when justifying high subsidies, such as the incomes of those who benefit from it, and if it helps get people out of cars.

The congestion pricing battle is not over yet. Hopefully they can add in an accessibility board to balance out the mobility board...
