"Lagos has significant work ahead", you say.

That's correct. You and your principals have had 27 years to do that significant work and things have simply deteriorated progressively to the point where Lagos State is now just one massive unified refuse dump.

It is clear that either you, however well intentioned you might be, or your principals, or all of you, lack the capacity, or the will, or the inclination to fix the refuse problem.

It almost feels as if we are in a paid giant medical experiment, to see how many variants of which diseases Lagosians can contract from the sheer amount of garbage, and how long it will take to kill us all with these unsanitary conditions, and when you match this with the welfare or lack thereof of Medical Practitioners, it begins to look plausible, doesn't it?

I have told you a few times. Waste management requires a degree of MICROMANAGEMENT and attention to detail that you simply cannot deploy in an over-centralised system such as you've been running unsuccessfully for 27 years.

@GRVlagos and I plan to return waste management to the LGAs, per the provisions of S.1h of the Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. To this end, we will provide take -off resources to ensure that the waste is sorted, recycled and incinerated as appropriate, with the waste hear being captured for power generation.

We also plan to help the LGAs capture the sewage, for the production of biogas on the one hand, for further power generation through the use of biogas-powered microturbine arrays, and manure, on the other hand, to boost agricultural production, and cause a significant drop in the cost of food.

If we all work together, we can Make Èkó Great Again.

Dear Tokunbo Wahab,
You are so full of lengthy explanations, with little by way of solutions.

Plenty of prose, very little results. I can offer you some small clues as to why there is so much flooding in Lagos State.

1. It might not be obvious to you and your principals, but most Lagosians and even foreigners can see it clear as day - REFUSE! GARBAGE! WASTE!

If you're not packing the refuse, it will stack up and be washed into the drainage by the rain. Citizens don't even have to dump their refuse in the drains. The rain will do it for them.

2. Roads and Drains: Do you have any idea how many roads (and therefore the accompanying drains) that Lagos State has per km² of land? I checked. It's 1.3km of roads (much of them in various states of disrepair), per km² of land.

Singapore has 13.6km of roads (and therefore, drains) per km² of land.

In case you're wondering what this has to do with flooding - more drains means less water on the road surfaces.

Solutions:

1. Clear the existing drains and main drainage channels of waste.

2. Build more roads and drains - it is clear ALL OVER LAGOS, that we lack enough roads. Many main roads are congested unnecessarily because the communities they traverse are not connected by alternative roads.

3. Build boardwalks (embankments) on all of the lagoon and river shorelines, and use sluice gates and high-powered water pumps to regulate water levels inland of the gates

I am merely putting out this information because these are just some of the pragmatic, practical measures @GRVlagos and I will implement to alleviate the perennial flooding problem.

27 years of incompetence have shown us that your APC government is completely and unarguably incapable of implementing these simple measures.

The Presidency announced on August 30 that President Bola Tinubu was leaving Nigeria for a three-week annual vacation in Europe. London was named as his first stop, and Nigerians were told he would return home after the working vacation.

That three-week period expired. On September 21, the Presidency announced that the President had extended his stay by “a few days” and would return “at the weekend.” The weekend came and went. The promise then changed to “this week.”

We need explanations not insults !!!

When a government announces one timeline, extends it, misses its own deadline and then offers another vague promise, Nigerians have every right to ask what changed. They have every right to ask who made the decision and who is accountable for it.

Instead of answering those basic questions, you have characteristically reached for ridicule.

We’ve heard this argument before and it didn’t end well…

It is a distraction.

Nigerians did not ask whether a President can send instructions from abroad. They asked why the return dates keep changing, when the President will actually return, and what constitutional arrangement governs an absence that has now gone beyond the period originally announced.

Section 145 of the Constitution provides that when the President is proceeding on vacation or is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, he is to transmit a written declaration to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Was that declaration transmitted?

If it was, the Presidency should say so plainly.

If it was not, the Presidency should explain the legal basis for the arrangement you are defending.

The parallels with the Yar’Adua era are therefore impossible to ignore and the issue is not that the two situations are identical.

The issue is the familiar official script: describe the absence as routine, offer categorical reassurance, insist that the President can continue governing from abroad and dismiss those asking for clear institutional answers.

During the Yar’Adua crisis, Nigerians were told that the President could continue to govern from outside the country. Today, they are told that the President is on a “working vacation,” is “hale and hearty” (Aondooaka the AGF actually used that exact phrase back then! ) and does not need to be physically present in Abuja in the digital age. The same reflex for unaccountability to the Nigerian people has not changed and it must.

In both cases, slogans and assurances are being used to fill the space where Nigerians deserve a firm timeline, a transparent constitutional arrangement and direct accountability. “L

“Hale and hearty” is not a return date. A list of meetings is not a constitutional answer. And an insult from a spokesperson is not a briefing. We are the ones paying his bills and should be kept abreast of what our employee is doing …if it feels like it’s beneath him then he should resign to private life and do as he pleases with his time and resources!

No one is arguing that the President has no right to take leave. The issue is whether the Presidency can give Nigerians a straight answer about the length of that leave, the reason for the extension and the authority under which government is being conducted.

The Presidency is not a private itinerary. It is a public office. If the President is working, tell Nigerians what decisions he has taken. If his stay has been extended, give the reason and a definite return date. If the constitutional notice was transmitted, confirm it.

What Nigerians do not need is to be scolded for asking questions that the government should have answered without being pushed.

Your job is to provide clarity, not to insult citizens who demand it. Accountability can’t be sent on vacation.

How do you expect a man who was an empowered deputy governor in those seven years to deliver a better outcome?

It's actually 7 hours.

They're trying to mitigate the damage by massaging the data.

The solutions are obvious, as @GRVlagos has said:

1. Heavier, more pragmatic use of the waterways.

2. Reconstruction of the major roads and bus routes.

3. Deployment of a minimum of 16,000 electric, high capacity brt buses on every major route with good roads.

4. Upgrade and massive Expansion of the railway network to accommodate cargo and petroleum products from the ports and the FTZ

5. Construction of high capacity container and petroleum terminals for the railways at every exit point of Lagos State, to minimise the number of heavy trailers coming into the ports and the refinery, thus reducing the amount of heavy traffic on the streets of Lagos.

Some of this work can be completed in 18 months. The railways will take a little longer, but on the evidence available elsewhere in Africa, we're probably looking at a maximum of 5 years to have a world class railway network covering Lagos State.

We should begin to see significant reductions in ACT (Average Commute Time) within the first 6 months, just due to road repairs and bus deployment.

If we all work together, we can Make Èkó Great Again.
