Governor Mbah receives Super Eagles star Omeruo, backs grassroots football initiative

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Wednesday received the Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, in his office.

Omeruo, who was accompanied by the General Manager of Rangers International FC, Amobi Ezeaku, briefed the governor on his proposed scouting project for Enugu and the South East, aimed at identifying and nurturing young football talents across the region.

Governor Mbah, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @PNMbah, assured Omeruo of the state government’s full support.

“I was delighted to receive Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, today. His vision to groom young talents aligns with our drive to empower youths through sports,” the governor said.

He commended Omeruo for his commitment to grassroots football, assuring that the state government would provide all necessary support to ensure the project thrives.

“As a government, we remain committed to advancing grassroots sports and strengthening Rangers International FC as a symbol of pride for Enugu and Nigeria,” Mbah stated.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has declared that coal deposits in the state would be used to generate 1,000mw of power, and would not be treated as a stranded asset without adequate compensation.

Mbah explained that coal deposits in the state have about 0.5 sulphuric content, saying he was counting technology to make the impact of coal utilisation on the environment minimal.

Mbah made these declarations Thursday in Lagos when he was the guest of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) “Meet The Governor Series,” where he presented a business case for investing in Enugu State.

He said: “We cannot treat our coal as a stranded asset, particularly the Enugu coal, which is a premium coal.

“Our target is to see how we can use our coal to generate at least 1000 megawatts of power. We do have technology today that makes coal utilisation less adverse to the environment. Essentially, that is the direction for us.

“Coal deposits in Enugu have less than 0.5 per cent sulphur content. For a lot of coal, if you have 1.0 per cent you are still okay. But we have 0.5 per cent.

“Our coal is also very good to fire power plants due to its high calorific value. So, we are on that and we are not going to warehouse our coal resources.

“However, if we have to warehouse or treat coal as a stranded asset, then there has to be a conversation on compensation.”

Mbah also said that his administration had cut crime rate in the state by 80 per cent and was putting infrastructure in place to attract three million visitors per year.

“Businesses are not designed to absorb security challenges. So, we have to get that out of the way. That is why we invested hugely in the area of security to build infrastructures that will enable us to defeat criminal activities.

“Today, in Enugu we have reduced crime rate by over 80 per cent,” he said.

Mbah revealed that in furtherance of tourism contribution to the state’s economy, he completed the Enugu International Conference Centre, ICC, that hosted 20,000 participants during the the 2025 Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference, while the ICC 5-Star Hotel was nearing completion and would be delivered soon.

“Enugu naturally lends itself to tourism. We are building the Cross of Hope, which is something we want to put in place to attract religious tourism.

“The highest point in Enugu State is about 580 metre above sea level and we are bringing a massive cross of about 100 metres to put on its highest point.

“Our plan is to bring in three million visitors. So, we worked with an investor to get the concenssioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

“Hopefully, the international wing of the airport will be operational by the first quarter of 2026. We are also investing to build the cargo terminal.

“We are looking at bringing in additional six aircraft for Enugu Air for the Christmas season. We are obviously going to expand very quickly because we have surpassed our projections within one month of operation,” he said.

The governor added that the state would have four branded hotels by the end of next year. “If you are expecting three million visitors hotels will be on huge demand,” he said.

The President of NBCC, Mr. Abimbola Olashore, in his welcome address, said that the timing of the “Meet The Governor Series” could not have been more fitting because Enugu had become a state on the move under Mbah’s administration.

“We have seen bold steps in digital governance, in infrastructure expansion, and in creative public-private partnerships.

“Each of these signals a state that is not waiting for the future, but actively shaping it.”

Meanwhile, speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Jonny Baxter, said the United Kingdom (UK) and Nigeria share a dynamic, long-standing and multi-dimensional trade relationship that is currently valued at £7.9 billion, the highest figure since records began and which continues to increase every year.

Baxter added that the United Kingdom is currently the biggest investor in Nigeria, accounting for about 65 per cent of all foreign direct investment (FDIs) flows into Nigeria. He described it as a demonstration of the depth of commitment based on historic ties.

“Nigeria is also the United Kingdom's second largest trading partner in Africa and its largest export market, and in February 2024, we signed something called the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership, which is about trying to make trade smoother between our two countries.

“It is the first of its kind that we have signed with an African country, and in fact it is the second globally, the first being with India, and you have seen where the trade relationship between the United Kingdom and India has gone. So, we certainly hope for the same sort of trajectory between us and Nigeria.”

Baxter also said that The UK’s “Developing Countries Trading Scheme,” would enable over 90 per cent of Nigeria’s exports to The UK to be duty-free.

“All the normal taxes are taken off those items exported from here and imported into the UK. But one of the key obstacles is often standards,” he said, adding that the UK was working with Nigerian standards authorities to help Nigerian companies raise the standards, “because once you are meeting British standards, you are meeting European standards, you are meeting American standards, you have got a much bigger market to export to,” he concluded.

Over 60,000 Farmers to Benefit from Free Fertilizer, Farm Inputs as Gov Mbah Flags Off Distribution

… Mbah has increased functional tractors in Enugu from less than 5 to hundreds in 2 years – farmers union chair

Over 60,000 farmers across Enugu State are set to benefit from a new round of free fertilizer and agro-inputs distribution as Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, weekend, flagged off the exercise on Saturday.

The event, attended by thousands of farmers and stakeholders at Okpara Square, was described as another bold step towards food security, poverty eradication, rural prosperity, and the transformation of farming into profitable venture in the state.

Governor Mbah, who recalled that his administration distributed 12,000 bags of fertilizer alongside power tillers, seedlings, cassava stems, and herbicides at no cost to farmers last year, said the 2024 intervention had led to bumper harvests and reduced food prices across the state.

“Therefore, it gives me great joy to be here today to flag-off the distribution of over 40,000 bags of free fertilizers and other agro inputs. Our farmers are the backbone of our communities – the hands that till the soil and bring food to our tables. Without you, there is no sustenance, no prosperity, and no growth,” he said.

The governor announced that 200-hectare Farm Estates were being established in each of the 260 political wards in the state, complete with irrigation systems, warehouses, tractor sheds, and power supply.

He revealed that 102 tractors had already been delivered, another 98 on the way, while 800 more would soon be assembled at the tractor plant nearing completion in the state capital.

“Farming is big business. That is why we are upgrading the Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, into a University of Agriculture to train the next generation of agricultural scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators,” Mbah added.

He also reaffirmed ongoing efforts to establish Agro-Industrial Processing Zones and Agricultural Transformation Centres across the three senatorial zones.

The governor stressed that the free inputs would go directly to registered farmers in the state’s database without middlemen.

“There is no red tape. The only pre-condition is to be a registered farmer. Currently, we have over 60,000 farmers in our database,” he said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Hon. Patrick Uburu, praised the governor for inspiring what he called “an agricultural revolution in the state,”noting that long-abandoned assets such as Enugu United Palm Products, Adarice Irrigation Scheme, Ojor and Mgbagbu Owa irrigation projects, and Sunrise Flour Mill had been revitalised under the Mbah administration.

Uburu highlighted new initiatives under the governor, including the Enugu State Livestock Productivity Centre, a Cocoa Development Initiative targeting 3,000 hectares by 2027, greenhouse farming with 2,000 greenhouses by 2026, and export warehouses for cashew processing.

He further commended the governor’s approval of crop insurance premiums to protect farmers against climate shocks and pests.

“Today’s event signifies a new chapter; an affirmation that the Governor is fully committed to transforming our rural communities into vibrant centers of economic growth and prosperity. The sense of pride I derive as Commissioner is immeasurable. It is all thanks to His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah – a man for whom there are no impossibilities,” Uburu said.

The Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Enugu chapter, Mr. Romanus Eze, also lauded the governor for fulfilling his promises to farmers, even as he recalled that Enugu once had fewer than five functional tractors, but now had over 200, with a tractor assembly plant already set up in the state.

“The governor has not only given us inputs, he has brought mechanisation to our doorsteps. He promised 1,000 tractors, and today we are seeing them. The Farm Estates that are coming up in every ward, the new seed laboratory, and the support from traditional rulers for land access are transforming agriculture into real business,” Eze said.

Similarly, the Chairman of Enugu North Local Government Area, Dr Ibenaku Onoh, described Mbah as “a governor, who does the big things as well as the small things,” stressing that the distribution of inputs in every ward reflected inclusive governance.

“What you are doing is to move Enugu from a state of consumption to a state of production. In agriculture, transport, water, and other sectors, you are doing wonders. The people are happy, and we promise to continue protecting your mandate,” he said.

The ceremony ended with the symbolic distribution of fertilizers to farmer cooperatives from the 17 local government areas, which stakeholders described as “a giant leap towards food security and sustainable rural development.”

Governor Peter Mbah has revamped Nigergas, dormant for three decades, creating direct jobs and thousands more across supply chains. The upgraded plant now produces medical and industrial gases to power hospitals, manufacturers, and workshops, reducing costs and boosting Enugu’s economy.

Community leaders hailed the project, with Dr. Joy Uduji calling Mbah “the Nehemiah of our time,” while Nollywood veteran Kanayo O. Kanayo noted, “Security is working in Enugu.”

Governor Mbah to NBA: "Law, the conscience of the nation, justice sector reform, a cornerstone of our administration"

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reminded lawyers that the law is more than a profession, as it serves as the conscience of the nation.
Mbah, who spoke during the opening of the 2025 Annual General Conference, AGC, of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Sunday, also restated the commitment of his administration to justice sector reform, saying that it remained the cornerstone of his government.
“Let me say this: the theme of this year’s conference, ‘Stand Out, Stand Tall,’ is a timely reminder of the responsibility we bear as lawyers and leaders. The law is not just a profession – it is the conscience of the nation. We are not only courtroom advocates; we are also defenders of truth, architects of peace, and champions of equity,” he said.
Listing some concrete steps by his administration towards justice sector reform, the governor said, “Since assuming office, we have made justice sector reform a cornerstone of our governance. Just a few examples will suffice.
“We were among the first states to fully implement financial autonomy for the judiciary in line with Section 121(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). This has enhanced the efficiency, independence, and dignity of our courts.
“We have carried out a comprehensive rehabilitation and digitization of our courtrooms across the three senatorial zones. The High Court Complex in Enugu is equipped with e-filing, virtual hearing facilities, and an integrated case management system.
“To decongest our courts and promote alternative dispute resolution, we have strengthened and expanded the Enugu Multi-Door Courthouse, making it a model in the region for commercial and family dispute settlement.
“Through partnership with civil society and the NBA, we have expanded access to pro bono legal services for indigent citizens and detainees, especially in our rural areas. No one should be too poor to afford justice.
“We have also carried out an extensive codification and review of obsolete state laws to reflect modern realities, ensure gender justice, and promote the ease of doing business in Enugu.
“Perhaps one of the reforms I am proudest of – we introduced real-time transcription for our courts. Attaining Verbatim Reporting for the courts has eliminated the strain of longhand recording on judges, cut down on delays and improved productivity,” he said.
He, however, asserted that none of the reforms was an end in itself, noting that they remained part of a broader vision of his government towards making Enugu State the preferred destination for investment, innovation, and inclusive development.
“From smart schools, safe communities to accessible healthcare – our vision cannot be achieved without a justice system that is fair, functional, and trusted,” he added.
The opening ceremony was chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Dr. Sa’ad Abubakar III, while the keynote address was given by charismatic leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa and a member of country’s national parliament, Julius Malema.
