when pepe hit the web2 scene on 4chan, there was something about his melancholic yet primal contentment that resonated

4chan prized anonymity, humor, and rebellion against control - and in that soil Pepe the Frog flourished

his face can express anything human - sadness, triumph, loneliness, smugness, irony - all in minimalist form

because of this emotional versatility and clarity, pepe quickly became the go-to method to transmit authentic emotion digitally in a world of masks and duplicity

and when the mainstream began policing language, art, and memes, pepe naturally became a totem of the people - a symbol of freedom and anti-authoritarian humor

in this potent environment Rare Pepes were born on Counterparty - among the earliest blockchain-based digital collectibles

Rare Pepes were community-minted digital trading cards that functioned as a form of proof-of-participation in internet culture, long before that phrase meant anything

among this community, a group of frog frens gathered to develop the world’s first tokenized pepe

on March 05, 2016, the real OG $PEPE was born

the distribution was organic - a Layer-1 proof-of-work chain with open mining pools any capable participant could join

no ICOs, no VCs, no bundled supply - just honest compute

the intention wasn’t speculation - it was cultural preservation through decentralization

we quickly built KEKDAQ - an early NFT marketplace that gave Rare Pepes a crypto-native home on Bitcoin/Counterparty, before the term 'NFT' had even been coined

then came an attempted cultural quarantine - an effort to contain pepe’s viral symbolism once it crossed ideological lines and was politicized

but all it really did was throw pepe into the limelight and open the doors to millions more who could relate to pepe’s irreverent, smug, smiling face

pepe inverted accusations through memetic resilience - every time the establishment tried to define him, he mutated and survived

and so did we

when some platforms forced a rename, we operated under two tickers - $PEPE and $MEME - and kept building toward a lasting, community-oriented network

with that goal in mind, we engineered our Ethereum bridge and launched it in 2023
