Former POW and Border Campaign Veteran Séamus Ó'Líonacháin is campaigning to lift the excommunication of all Irish men and women who were excommunicated from the Catholic Church since 1169 for opposing the British occupation of Ireland. We would ask that all Irish people and supporters across the world support this campaign and write a letter to the Pope requesting that the excommunication of Irish men and women, including IRA Volunteers and the Fenians be lifted and a formal apology from the Pope be issued.

As Séamus said the excommunications go back hundreds of years. They became more prevalent during the time of the Fenians in the 1860s where the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church threatened excommunication against those who organised against the Crown. In some cases those threats were followed through.

During the Civil War, Volunteers of the Irish Republican Army who remained faithful to the All Ireland Republic and refused to accept partition or swear an oath to a foreign king were told they were guilty of murder and subject to excommunication. Bishop Daniel Cohalan in Cork excommunicated every IRA volunteer in the diocese. Among them was Séamus’s father. The majority if not all were devout Catholics who went to their graves having not received absolution. None of those who carried out atrocities on behalf of the Free State were ever excommunicated, including those who tied nine Irish Republicans to a landmine in Ballyseedy, detonating it and killing eight.

When the next generation began the Border Campaign, volunteers who went on active service and were captured were excommunicated, among them Séamus Ó'Líonacháin. Many families now had two generations who had been excommunicated from the church.

The Church only ever seemed to look one way. Hundreds of Irish Catholic priests went off as chaplains with the British Army in both World Wars, ministering to men fighting under the same Crown that partitioned this country. None of them were excommunicated. Plenty came home decorated, some even got titles. No bishop ever said wearing a British Army uniform was a problem for a Catholic. It was only when Irish men fought for their own country that the Church suddenly found a problem with it.

There has been no acknowledgment that these were men and women who fought for Irish freedom, not murderers. The excommunications are still there, never lifted, and the Church has never had to answer for it. We call on the Pope to lift excommunications and issue an apology the men and women who fought for Irish freedom throughout the generations.
