As the weeklong 27th Coronation Anniversary of King Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, the 16th Asantehene of the Asante Region in Ghana draws to a close today, 26th April, the neo realization of african monarchy as a rallying institution for the preservation of African identity was richly espoused as African leaders, diplomats, Ghanaian diaspora, billionaire business moguls and politicians converged on Asanteman to honour a pillar of peace, using his golden stool to unite and give his people a voice.
Inviting his brother monarch, His Majesty, Ogiamẹ Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri from Nigeria to celebrate such milestone with him, Otumfuo has further accentuated the undying essence of monarchy as a support base for government; not a competition or a rival arm of authority. Monarchy complements government efforts. Otumfuo himself puts it better during his coronation address, “…even as we focus on peace, we cannot ignore the reality that there are preconditions for the sustenance of peace, good governance, the rule of law and a sound resilient economy”.
