At #SAF2023 ? Come see @Reforest_Morris, Kendall DeLyser, and I talk about cross boundary #partnerships that support post-fire #restoration and the creation of climate- and wildfire-resilient forests.
The #whitebark pine story isn’t just the story of a tree—it’s the story of an ecosystem. My favorite part of recent fieldwork was seeing this story play out, watching 4 different black 🐻 eating whitebark pine seeds from massive squirrel middens.

We worked with @YellowstoneNPS, @GrandTetonNPS, and @GlacierNPS to implement an experiment that will help us operationalize direct seeding and learn what we can do to improve this technique as a restoration tool—all while actively restoring the species.
Direct seeding could expand #whitebark’s restoration 🧰, ⬆️ restoration in remote areas, ⬇️ time for compliance, and ⬇️ time between seed collection and restoration. @AmericanForests and @NatlParkService just began a seeding experiment to restore the tree and refine methodology.
If you've listened to our podcast Headwaters (https://t.co/mjiLjZkTv0), you know that whitebark pine trees are a critical piece of Glacier—and you know they're dying
@NatlParkService and @AmericanForests are collaborating on whitebark restoration across the Western US
Thrilled to work with @NatlParkService to restore #whitebark! We’ll continue to expand the restoration toolkit by refining direct seeding and collect the seed that makes all restoration work possible. #SeedSeptember

However, we’ve got some research to do before direct seeding becomes operational. @AmericanForests is working with @YellowstoneNPS, @GrandTetonNPS, and @GlacierNPS to collect much needed data to see what dials 🎛️ we can turn to maximize success.
What does a #DayInTheLife of a seed collector look like? American Forests Project Manager for the Rio Grande Valley @Gcell_garza gives us a glimpse into the day-to-day conservation and restoration efforts happening on the ground.
