Cross-stitch: a time-inefficient, but fun and crafty way to communicate science!
P. Gajer & R. Brotman et al. “Temporal dynamics of the human vaginal microbiota.” Figure 1
New research out from our @UMSOM Institute for Genome Sciences Rebecca Brotman @BrotmanEpi & team finds that protective Lactobacillus spp. decreases in peri- & postmenopausal women & those with a history of BV after a single exposure to hyperosmolal vaginal lubricant.
Are there always this many listeria-related recalls and I just never noticed…? I think I’m at 4 so far this pregnancy (stone fruit, spinach, and cheese/dairy x2), and I still have a a few months to go. I would really like to eat my cheese in peace 🥲
Things that are hard: the last few months of thesis writing ahead of your defense
Things that are extra hard: the last few months of thesis writing ahead of your defense while being in the first trimester
Finally feeling better…just in time for my defense in a few weeks!
@pauldauenhauer Definitely a lot of effort…but if I see a lab with ten graduate students, I’m wondering how much time the PI has to dedicate towards mentoring each student 😳
I started my PhD program back in 2016 about a month after my 22nd birthday. Seven and half years later, and I finally submitted my thesis to my committee today. There is still a lot of work to be done ahead of my defense next month, but for now I am going to take a nap ✌🏻
I’ve lived in the city since 2016 and was used to typical city noises, but just moved to a wooded suburban area last month. Was hearing a repetitive swishy sound and thought maybe it was the neighbors dishwasher. Nope. It’s just all the bugs in the woods behind our house 😅
Three days later and this introvert has finally recovered from #STIHIV2023
So grateful for the opportunity to gather with both the @BrotmanEpi lab and the international community to talk about science and sex!
So grateful to see ASTDA recognizing my wonderful PI and mentor @BrotmanEpi for her important and impactful work on the vaginal microbiome. Congrats!!!
Our Institute for Genome Sciences's faculty Rebecca Brotman @BrotmanEpi (right) won the Achievement Award from the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (@ASTDA1) for her research on the vaginal #microbiome's role in sexually transmitted diseases #STD. @UMmedschool
@itsafronomics And I have the same feeling about academic jobs. If the choice is “dream” TT job but in a location I know I’d hate vs less-perfect job in a preferred city, then I choose the latter. I value my community of friends/family more than I do the opportunity to work
@itsafronomics Yes! Grad school is hard enough without adding hating where you live or having no support system. I only applied to East Coast schools in cities I liked. Most people wouldn’t apply to jobs in cities they disliked, so why should grad students be expected to?
