Imagine being a Spanish conquistador or Portuguese explorer in the 16th century.

You round up a few hundred guys.

Veterans of the Italian wars or the Reconquista. Disinherited lesser nobles. Battle-hardened mercenaries.

Tell them you're sailing to an unknown part of the world.

You might not be able to pay them now, but if they survive and win they will become lords of a new colony.

You endure sea voyages lasting months and end up in some exotic tropical island in the Caribbean, or an endless jungle in South America, or the monsoon-wracked coastline of India.

You have to fight battles against hordes of enemies, outnumbered 5 to 1. Or 10 to 1. Or 30 to 1. Doesn't matter. As long as your men hold the line and remember their training with pike, musket and sword you will probably win.

You have to be an expert diplomat and make alliances with local chieftains.

You have to conjure up supplies out of thin air.

You have to keep your men encouraged in horrific conditions. Pray the rosary. Recite the Psalms.

Half your men die of disease.

Another quarter or more in battle.

But those few survivors, tough as nails, now end up with statues in their honour in far flung corners of the globe and maybe granted a royal reception back home.

They're rich, they've won honour for the nation. Probably converted a few thousand people to Catholicism as a byproduct of conquest.

Place names and country names change because of them. Coins minted with their faces.

Is there an equivalent to this in the modern age?
