Equality Utah’s Position on the Alleged Shooter:

New reports about the alleged shooter do not change our position. We condemn and disavow the shooter's actions. They were cowardly, heinous, and evil. Our condemnation is unwavering regardless of the shooter’s political affiliation, orientation, identity, or religious background.

He must be tried swiftly and, if guilty, punished to the full extent of the law. We will not condemn entire groups of people based on one person’s actions.

The narrative has shifted and changed multiple times, with false arrests and many news sources being blatantly inaccurate. We are still waiting for confirmation on many details.

But still, there are sinister forces in our country that aim to pit one group of Americans against the other. We must resist this impulse and stand united against the violence and divisive rhetoric working to tear our great nation apart.

Equality Utah unequivocally condemns the act of violence committed against Charlie Kirk. Political violence is always wrong. It has no justification and no place in our democracy.

We stand firmly against violence toward anyone, for any reason. And we affirm the right of every American to express their views freely and safely —even, and especially, when we fervently disagree with them.

Our democracy depends on robust debate, not intimidation or violence. Today we defend that principle without hesitation.

Our hearts go out to Charlie’s family and loved ones at this time.

Equality on the Road! 🌈🚗

This week, Troy and Marina visited the town of Helper with two Equality Utah supporters, Diane Stewart and Spencer Stokes. This charming Carbon County town has become a hub for artists and dreamers, with charming galleries, a coffee shop, restaurants and a growing creative spirit. It’s also a place where LGBTQ Utahns are not just accepted, but elected to public office.

We were welcomed to town by Mayor Lenise Peterman (in the center)—the town’s first woman and first openly lesbian mayor—who has led this historic community through two successful terms.

Standing on Main Street with residents, including artists and allies, Ben and Melanie Steele, we shared stories, visions, and hopes for a fair and just Utah.

We didn’t leave empty handed. Thanks to the generosity of Diane and Spencer, we brought home an original Ben Steele work -- The United States of Pop! to hang in our new Salt Lake City office!

✨ Next time you’re passing through Helper, stop for a coffee, explore the galleries, and feel the love this small town has to offer.

⚖️ Last night, a judge in Utah issued an important ruling in a case concerning Proposition 4, a Ballot Initiative passed by Utah voters in 2018 requiring political boundaries to be drawn by an independent commission rather than the legislature.

✅ The court declared that Proposition 4 is legal, that the current political maps used in Utah are unconstitutional, and that the legislature must redraw maps in a way that respects voters voices, rather than give preference to the legislature to use redistricting for their own political benefit.

🌟 This is a huge win for Utahns and for our country in general, reaffirming that voters should pick their elected representatives and not the other way around.

After excelling in last year’s cohort, Jace naturally stepped into this leadership role — helping guide the next generation of changemakers. He’s studying sociology at Utah Valley University, with a minor in writing studies, and is passionate about civic dialogue, digital communication, and building community.

Outside of school and work, Jace enjoys writing poetry, reading astrology charts, working out, and spending time with his dog Charlie and his cat Emily. 🐾
