Today’s action revoking access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW violates the First Amendment. The implications extend beyond these organizations: a standard used to exclude one news outlet because of its coverage could be applied to any outlet in the future. The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably.  That’s why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting. The WHCA calls on the administration to immediately restore our colleagues' access.

The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a “ban on the free press.”

The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask.

This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office.

President Trump was not in the vicinity of the World Trade Center when it was hit. He was in Trump Tower, miles away from the towers and nearby One Liberty Plaza, which is/was also known as the US Steel building.

There was public concern in the days following the attack that One Liberty Plaza might collapse, but the authorities repeatedly said it was structurally sound, and there's not currently any public evidence Trump went into it amid these collapse worries (?), much less that he was rushed out by firefighters. In varying language, he has repeatedly claimed for years he was at Ground Zero with a large crew of his workers helping with the recovery in the days after 9/11, but people who were definititely on site have said they never saw him or a Trump-organized crew on site and that it wouldn't make sense for them to have had access; there are pictures and videos of Trump in the neighborhood in the following days, in a clean suit, but not on the actual site.

President Trump repeated long-debunked lies while talking about the Supreme Court ruling today on mail-in ballots and the ruling expected tomorrow on birthright citizenship. Quick fact check of some of his claims:

1) Falsely claimed mail-in voting is “really dishonest"; it's a legitimate voting method used by legitimate voters, including Trump himself. to cast legitimate ballots. All evidence shows fraud rates are tiny even though they're slightly higher than with in-person voting.

2) Falsely described what Jimmy Carter and a Carter-led 2005 commission said about mail-in ballots; Carter didn't say "you can't have them" and the commission didn't say cheating was inevitable when they're used. Though the commission was skeptical of mail-in voting, it also: highlighted how Oregon was holding successful mail-only elections by introducing key safeguards; offered recommendations for making mail-in voting more secure; said further research was needed on the pros and cons.

3) Falsely claimed of bithright citizenship, “We’re the only nation that does it. No other nation does that birthright citizenship. No one; not even close.” About three dozen countries provide automatic citizenship to people born on their soil, including Canada, Mexico and the majority of South American countries.

4) Claimed, “We’re the only country in the world that does this type of mail-in ballot.” Didn't explain what he meant by "this type of," so can't call this false, but dozens of countries use mail-in ballots, and several wealthy nations, including Canada, the UK, Germany and Switzerland, allow widespread use of them.
