The World Cup of Contempt: How the West Is Using Football to Wage War on Africa From Stephen Miller’s deportation machine to Kemi Badenoch’s willful blindness — the systematic degradation of African humanity is no accident. They demanded $15,000 deposits from African fans simply to watch a football match. They froze visas for entire African nations while rolling out the red carpet for others. And through all of it — through every humiliation, every gate slammed in a Black face, every African family told their money and their dreams were not welcome — a woman of Nigerian heritage stood before the cameras in London and declared, with breathtaking serenity, that Britain is the least racist country on earth. I looked at the ceiling for a long time after that. Let us begin with the facts, because the facts are damning enough. The Referee Who Dared to Be Somali Omar Abdulkadir Artan — Africa’s top male referee in 2025, hand-selected by the Confederation of African Football, one of only 52 referees chosen from the entire world to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup — arrived at Miami International Airport from Istanbul and was turned away at the door. His crime? Being Somali. U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed he was “determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns” — a bureaucratic formulation so deliberately vague it could mean anything and therefore means nothing, except this: Somalia is on the Trump administration’s travel ban list. FIFA confirmed that Artan “will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry,” while carefully distancing itself from the decision, noting that “a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country.” So there it is. The world’s greatest sporting event — hosted on American soil, generating what Trump himself boasted would be $30 billion and 200,000 jobs — and the man who was chosen to enforce its laws on the pitch was deemed a threat to national security. Not a player. Not a fan. A referee. A man carrying a whistle and a rulebook. This is what contempt looks like when it wears a uniform. The $15,000 Tax on Black Joy The Artan case is not an isolated incident. It is the visible tip of a deliberate architecture of exclusion. A Trump administration policy required travelers from five World Cup-qualified countries — Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Tunisia — to front a bond of up to $15,000 in order to enter the United States for the tournament. All five are African nations. The amounts generally run between $5,000 and $15,000, and are required for passport holders from certain countries under B-1 or B-2 visas. Though refundable, the cost of the bonds alone is enough to make travel to the US prohibitive for most fans from those countries, which have average annual income levels of about $5,000 per year or less. Read that again. The deposit required to watch your country play football in America is three times the average annual income of the very fans being asked to pay it. This is not a visa requirement. This is a poll tax. This is a literacy test at the stadium gate. This is a system designed not to screen travelers but to ensure certain travelers simply do not come. Only after sustained international pressure did the United States announce it would waive the proposed $15,000 deposit for fans holding valid match tickets. The damage, however, was already done. The message had already been sent. You are welcome to our World Cup, Africa — provided you can prove, in cash, that you are worthy of it. The Architect of the Machine Behind all of this stands one man: Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and the most powerful immigration official in the United States government. The driving force behind the Trump administration’s efforts to stop what it calls the “third world” from “besieging” the United States, Miller is the architect of policies that have targeted most of Africa, much of Asia, Latin America, and parts of Eastern Europe. In January, the Trump administration suspended immigration visas for people from 75 countries, covering most of Africa and much of Asia. Miller, a notorious figure widely described as a white nationalist, is the principal mastermind behind the cruelest anti-immigrant policies in recent American history. Now holding the role of White House Deputy Chief of Staff, he has described plans for a “red state deportation army,” mass detention camps, and daily ICE flights. His power is evident in his daily operations: he directed ICE officials to meet daily quotas of 3,000 immigration arrests — an unprecedented number that represents a systematic campaign of terror against immigrant communities across America. Here is what makes Miller’s story particularly instructive. He is the grandson of Jewish immigrants who fled Hitler’s Europe and found refuge — salvation — in the United States of America. His family’s survival is a direct testament to what open borders and human compassion can do. And yet this man — this inheritor of refuge — has dedicated his entire adult life to ensuring that no one who looks like the people his grandfather was running from will ever find that same door open to them again. His own grandfather and rabbi have publicly disowned him. The moral bankruptcy is total. The 1936 Berlin Olympics offer an instructive parallel. Nazi Germany, understanding the power of optics, temporarily relaxed its race laws during those Games. Athletes of color competed. The world watched. Hitler smiled for the cameras. But the moment the torch was extinguished, the machinery of persecution resumed. Today, the Trump administration cannot even manage that cynical restraint. They are using this once-in-a-generation global celebration to actively, openly, and proudly discriminate against Africans — during the event itself. “The Least Racist Country on Earth”: The Badenoch Delusion Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Kemi Badenoch — Leader of the Conservative Party, daughter of Nigeria, beneficiary of the very immigration laws she now implicitly dismisses — has declared Britain the least racist country on earth. Speaking at the Institute for Government, Badenoch said: “Modern Britain is the least racist country on earth. I speak from experience. As a child, I lived on three different continents. There is nowhere else on Earth I’d rather be. There is nowhere else on Earth that I would be doing the job that I’m doing right now as a black woman in a majority white country.” Most recently she insisted Britain “is not a racist country,” while simultaneously acknowledging that “we are now seeing more and more hostility to people of every ethnicity.�� She published an op-ed in The Times this week titled: “Institutional racism? This is institutional incompetence.” One admires, in a morbid way, the precision of the maneuver. Acknowledge the hostility. Reframe the cause. Absolve the system. Blame the activists for noticing. What Badenoch will not say — cannot say, because it would unravel the entire performance — is that she would not be British at all were it not for the immigration framework that allowed her Nigerian-born mother to give birth to her on British soil and claim citizenship for her. She did not arrive in Britain until she was seventeen years old. She is, in the most literal biographical sense, the product of the immigration and citizenship laws she now uses as a political weapon against others who look exactly like her mother did when she stepped off that plane. This is not courage. This is not authenticity. This is what happens when political ambition requires a Black face to deliver a white grievance. Nigeria: Destruction by Design And then there is Nigeria. I have watched, with growing dread, as Africa’s most populous nation — a country of 220 million souls, the continent’s largest economy, the source of some of the world’s most remarkable human capital — is systematically hollowed out. And I have come to a conclusion I can no longer soften or qualify: Nigeria is being deliberately destabilized. The evidence assembles itself. A president — Bola Ahmed Tinubu — whose entire administration has functioned as an exercise in economic immolation: the abrupt removal of the fuel subsidy, the collapse of the naira, the implosion of purchasing power for ordinary Nigerians while his network of cronies and contractors continues to feast. A man whose most important constitutional responsibility is the security of his people, and who has looked the other way as kidnapping, banditry, and terror expand from the North and East and South-South with metastatic efficiency. American military assets deployed, we were told, to help combat the terrorist threat. And since their arrival? The violence has increased. The kidnappings have multiplied. The killings continue. Legal orders from a U.S. federal court — before Judge Beryl Howell — demanding the disclosure of Tinubu’s criminal files have been defied, days after the final deadline, with no consequence and no accountability from Washington. This is not bureaucratic inefficiency. When a government instructs its agencies to defy a federal court order regarding its most important African asset, that is a policy decision. My letters to editors of major European publications, naming the corruption, naming the characters, laying out the documented evidence, are ignored. Formal submissions to international accountability bodies sit unanswered. The FBI and DEA respond with Glomar. The silence is not passive. Silence at this scale, on these facts, is a choice. I am not given to conspiracy. I am given to evidence. And the evidence points, with increasing clarity, toward Langley, Virginia. The Continent in the Crosshairs Look at the broader canvas and the pattern becomes undeniable. South Africa, where black South Africans are killing and beating fellow Africans in eruptions of xenophobic violence that serve one clear political purpose: to destabilize the ANC government, rehabilitate white minority power, and open the continent’s most industrialized economy to the agenda of men like Elon Musk — a white South African billionaire who has done more to inflame racial division on the African continent than any figure since the architects of apartheid, while simultaneously engineering a pipeline of white South African refugees into America while Black and brown migrants are turned away at the border. Sudan, where a civil war of apocalyptic proportions burns while the world looks elsewhere. The Sahel, where one coup follows another in a choreography too consistent to be entirely spontaneous. Boko Haram. ISWAP. The Lakurawa movement expanding through the Northwest. Terror franchises that emerged, metastasized, and continue to operate in an environment in which Western intelligence has unparalleled visibility — and yet somehow, always, the violence persists and expands. I am not stupid. I can see exactly what is happening. And it is time Africans everywhere named it clearly: The West is back on the project of recolonization. It no longer needs guns and governors. It uses debt, destabilization, asset extraction, and carefully managed chaos. It uses men like Tinubu to do from within what colonial administrations once did from without. The World Cup as Mirror The 2026 FIFA World Cup was supposed to be a celebration of the world’s game. Instead, it has become a mirror in which the world can see, clearly and without distortion, exactly how much of humanity is considered fully human by those who hold the levers of power. Africa’s best referee — barred. Africa’s fans — financially extorted before the waiver was extracted under pressure. African nations — visas frozen, entry denied, paperwork weaponized. And through all of it, the machinery grinds on: deportations, travel bans, detention quotas, the DHS posting fantasies of an America “no longer besieged by the third world.” The 1936 Olympics, at least, had the decency to pretend. This World Cup doesn’t even bother. It is time for the African Union, for FIFA’s African member associations, for every African head of state with a functioning moral compass, to state plainly: if Africa is not welcome in America, then America’s World Cup is not welcome in Africa’s support. The billions in revenue, the television audiences, the cultural legitimacy that African participation confers upon this tournament — all of it is conditional on our dignity being respected. We are not guests. We are co-owners of this game. And it is long past time we acted like it.
