My latest commission will feature a nine-foot handmade chain. Here are a few closeup shots of the more detailed segments. Three feet finished, six to go.
"Twisted Twelve" is now ticking away on the walls of the Robert Kidd Gallery in downtown Birmingham. If you're in the area and need to know what time it is stopping in is the best (but not quickest) way to find out. Go see! Pics don't do them justice!
I’m a total sucker for these magnifying lenses. I love it when you can actually see the gears moving when you look through them. Can’t wait to finish this piece. Completion this fall maybe? One step at a time down a long patient road. https://t.co/CYz5Wz7bCb
The latest commission has a healthy heartbeat! The next step is completing the chain so that I can test the mechanism for the full one-week run-time. After that I can begin sculpting everything with... https://t.co/fKZ1D4hjTd
"Quinquagenarius"
Not long ago I was approached to create a mechanical clock that would commemorate a client’s 50th birthday. He wanted something similar to an earlier piece I made called “Mechanical... https://t.co/IYWygPuPjY
Midnight drop on February 28th. This is the first time I’ve set the clock up to trip the perpetual calendar on it’s own power. So far so good! Since the calendar hands were set to February 28 (I... https://t.co/zqUpSn2qzF
First ticks!!! There comes a time during the construction of every clock, like a ritual, that I make a pendulum out of a wire, a chunk of scrap brass, and a C clamp. Quickly thrown together out of... https://t.co/pva7CJtKe9
The latest quartz commission is finished! As requested this one is about double the size of my usual quartz work, although it’s hard to tell on the white background with no context. After testing the... https://t.co/hlxa9Q34Tf
The new perpetual calendar clock is assembled and mounted on the wall with a steel bracket that could hold an elephant. My best guess on the progress is that I’m about a third finished. While a lot of... https://t.co/DjQUfNNUWA
This clockmaker is in a very good mood today. There’s a point during the construction of every clock that I have to drill a series of holes in a set of frame plates. Those holes have to be spaced... https://t.co/8vP2qutCBJ
Most of the parts for "Perpetual No.1" are cut out now. I just need the backing pieces for the number panels, and the calendar dials. I've also finished rough-spoking the gears, and have some pinions finished. Starting to look like the drawing now - getting excited!
"Twisted Twelve" will be on display at Divani in Grand Rapids for just two more weekends. I'll be there this Friday & Saturday. Come by and say hi!
Installation complete. Art Prize 2018...bring it on:) I spent a significant amount of time at this venue taking in the atmosphere, and having some food and drinks. Really love this place! I also got a... https://t.co/AaqHuNNQ5r
Making gears today! After taking a bit of time from this project to prep for art prize, and also learn some new techniques (more on that later) I’m back to work on Perpetual No.1. This is the 200-tooth center gear for the main clock train.
“Twisted Twelve” will be making an appearance at Art Prize 2018 in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It will be on display at Divani, an intimate and refined restaurant and bar. The pictures, and even... https://t.co/oEGQyZRRTG
Next clock? This one will feature a few magnifying glasses, with the main lens seated in the top of the frame, right over the most active gears in the train.
